Amazon Kindle Smartphone To Sport 4.7 Inch Screen [REPORT]

Updated on

Thanks to the success of the Kindle e-readers and tablet computers, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) may be in the process of launching their very own smartphone. Rumor has it that the phone may arrive during the second quarter of this year and it could feature a 4.7 inch display.  This report comes from DigiTimes as reported from unnamed sources.

Amazon Kindle Smartphone To Sport 4.7 Inch Screen [REPORT]

Prior reports indicated that the Amazon smartphone would feature a 4.3 inch display.

The Amazon phone is rumored to compete with the likes of Android and Apple. Although the purported smartphone is expected to launch in a couple of months, it could still be delayed a bit longer. The phone was supposed to arrive earlier but that was postponed reportedly because of supply issues. Right now, the online retailer is in the midst of perfecting the smartphone before it is released. Foxconn is also supposed to be behind the assembling of the phones.

The Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) phone will most likely be very similar to the popular Kindle Fire, which is a low-end tablet that runs on a highly modified version of Android software and pedals lots of content to go with the device. The Amazon smartphone probably won’t be considered a direct competitor to the iPhone, but if Apple does release a budget-friendly iPhone, there may be some competition there.

The current smartphone market is currently saturated with many different smartphones and only a handful of those phones are notable. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s Kindle Fire is a popular tablet but in no way it’s comparable to higher end tablets like the iPad or iPad Mini. Perhaps Amazon should reconsider a foray into the smartphone market and keep their focus on selling software, downloads, and merchandise. The last thing the market needs is another low-end smartphone.
