Over 2M Copies Of Super Mario Odyssey Sold In Just 3 Days

Nintendo Switch was the focus of the investors during Nintendo’s quarterly financial results. However, a revelation that initially went somewhat unnoticed was Nintendo’s announcement of the Super Mario Odyssey sales, which according to the company’s estimate, has sold over 2 million within three days of its release (or 463 copies every minute).

Meeting the expectations

The impressive sales figure implies that out of Switch’s seven million owners, over a third have already bought the copy of the Super Mario Odyssey game. “We will endeavor to further increase the number of consumers who want to purchase Super Mario Odyssey, and eventually we would like the game to be seen as an evergreen title that has longevity in the market beyond this holiday season,” Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told analysts.

In the United Kingdom, the Mario game comes as the biggest launch from Nintendo outrunning Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Going by the history, it is the sixth biggest Nintendo launch of all time in the United Kingdom, notes Eurogamer. Further, according to UK-based Chart-Track, the release of the game has also contributed to a 64% rise in Switch sales.

“By releasing this product against a backdrop of maintained and growing buzz around Nintendo Switch, which also has continually high usage rates, we think this will give us a big edge heading into the holiday season,” Kimishima said. Nintendo, earlier this week, reported its financial numbers raising its goal of Switch sales to 14 million from 10 million for the first year. The console has already sold over 7.5 million units.

The latest title in the Super Mario series has won many awards at the biggest game shows, such as E3 and Gamescom, thus raising the expectations of players. Though it launched just a few days back, judging by its reviews and comments on social media, it appears to be meeting those expectations.

Super Mario Odyssey gamewhat’s special about it?

Super Mario Odyssey was launched along with big names such as Assassin’s Creed Origins, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Despite the stiff competition, the Mario title bagged the number two spot in the UK’s physical sales charts for the week ending Oct. 28.

Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey game received positive reviews from critics and fans with some calling it an absolute delight. What gamers like about the game is the scope that it offers, be it exploring a new place or stumbling upon some new ability. It gives gamers a new way to interact with the world, like offering them the freedom to run and fire a tank, or dress as a clown, or guide the sheep across the desert.

Something that keeps the players hooked on the game is that Super Mario Odyssey never punishes the player for failing. There are times when the players fail, but they are not punished, and this makes the game welcoming every time the gamer wants to play. Unlike other titles, there are no lives to lose, and only a few of the coins are taken away if the gamer fails. Also, the game is saved automatically, meaning the player does not need to play from the start if a certain level is not achieved.
