Coronavirus stimulus check: IRS again extends deadline to claim $500 dependent payment

Published on

To ensure that all who are eligible for a stimulus payment get what they deserve, the IRS has again extended the deadline. This latest deadline extension is for those who have received their coronavirus stimulus check, but didn’t get the $500 dependent payment. Such persons can now claim the dependent payment by Nov. 21.

Coronavirus stimulus check: deadline extension to claim $500 dependent payment

On Monday, the IRS announced that it is extending the deadline to claim the $500 dependent payment to Nov. 21. The original deadline to register for the dependent payment was Sept. 30.

“As part of an effort to help people who were unable to provide their information in time to receive Economic Impact Payments for their qualifying children, the Internal Revenue Service announced today that federal beneficiaries who didn't register to receive $500 per child payments earlier this year now have additional time,” the IRS said in a press release.

A point to note is that the latest extension to the deadline is for the federal beneficiaries, such as those getting Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, railroad retirement benefits and veteran benefits.

This group of people primarily includes those who don’t file a tax return in 2018 and 2019, or are homeless, have low-income and others. To claim the dependent payment, these people (even if they have already received a stimulus check) now need to use the IRS' non-filer web tool to provide information to the IRS on their qualifying children.

Under the CARES Act, American households with children under 17 years old and income below $99,000 (or $198,000 for joint filers) got $500 per child.

Deadline for non-filers extended as well

Earlier this month, the IRS also extended the deadline for the non-filers who have yet to claim their $1,200 coronavirus stimulus check. Such people also have until Nov. 21 to submit their claim.

According to the IRS, non-filers can speed up their payment (both dependent payment and stimulus check) if they choose to get the payment via direct deposit. If not, the agency will mail them a paper check. Once people file their claim for the payment, they can check their payment status by going to the Get my Payment tool, available on IRS.gov.

As per a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), about 8.7 million people who are eligible for the stimulus payment haven’t yet gotten the money because of incomplete records with the IRS and Treasury Department.

Further, the watchdog noted that the Treasury Department and IRS had made efforts to address distribution issues with the stimulus payment. However, the GAO said the agencies don’t have updated information on how many eligible people are still to get the stimulus payment.

In case you miss this extended deadline (both dependent payment and stimulus check), then you can still claim the dependent payment (and stimulus check) when you file your 2020 tax returns next year.
