Trump’s Biggest Big Lie

Published on

If he loses on November 3rd, President Donald Trump has repeatedly declared that he won’t accept the results. His reason is very simple: The only way he can lose is if there’s massive voter fraud.

No Evidence Of A Widespread Voter Fraud

The president certainly knows a thing or two about lying and stealing since that was his basic business model for over four decades. But neither he nor anyone else has ever provided any evidence that there has ever been widespread voter fraud in any of our national elections – at least not since 1876.

Of course, there have been scattered instances of illegal immigrants and dead people casting ballots, and possibly even a stray dog. But nothing approaching Trump’s claim in 2016 of three million illegal immigrants voting for Hillary Clinton in California. Or even the thousands of Massachusetts residents who crossed the New Hampshire border to vote illegally for Clinton in that state.

Trump is perhaps our nation’s most prominent practitioner of “the big lie,” a term that was actually coined by Adolph Hitler in his autobiographical Mein Kampf. A big lie was “…so colossal that no one would believe that its author “could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.”

If you repeat a lie enough times, a lot of people will come to believe that it’s actually true. Like Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, Trump keeps repeating his own lies, convincing his legions of “deplorables” that they must be true.

A History Of Spreading The Big Lie

Trump has a history of spreading the big lie. For years, he insisted that Barrack Obama was born in Kenya. Now, he’s at it again, this time insisting – without providing a scintilla of evidence -- that there has been widespread voter fraud in our national elections, and that there will be again this year.

Trump will keep telling his big lie to justify his not accepting defeat on November 3rd. If he can throw the vote-counting process into chaos, he will then refuse to leave office when his term expires on January 20th. He will be quite willing to subvert our democracy so that he can hang on to his job.

A crooked businessman, a pathological liar, and a severe narcissist, Trump sees nothing wrong with destroying our democracy to prolong his failed political career. And like his predecessors, Hitler and Goebbels, Trump has no qualms about subverting our democracy to satisfy his own thirst for power.
