Grand Theft Auto V (or GTA 5) is among the most profitable games of all time. The title made its debut in 2013, but still, it was the top seller in 2019. However, if you still haven’t played the game or want to play it again without incurring any extra charges, now is your chance. Microsoft has now made available GTA 5 on Xbox Game Pass. So, you can access the game for free if you have subscribed to Xbox Game Pass.
GTA 5 old, but still gold
This seven-year old game has sold over 115 million copies since its release, and is the top seller even now. Moreover, it is the most-viewed game on Twitch and among the top five games on Steam. One thing that you may not have realized is that the GTA 5 did not even launch on the current generation of consoles.
It first arrived on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Later, the game debuted on newer consoles with more features. The game usually costs between $15 and $30 if purchased from the Microsoft Store, but now, you can get it for free. All you need is the Xbox Game Pass and Xbox One.

Microsoft made this big announcement via an amusing tweet. Later, the company revealed the news in a blog post as well. “For those of you with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Live Gold, you’ll also have access to Grand Theft Auto Online, a dynamic and persistent online world for up to 30 players,” Megan Spurr, Xbox Game Pass Community Manager, said.
Now is the time to buy Xbox Game Pass
If you have long been planning to subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass, then now is the best time to do so. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service that allows members access to free games. The service costs $10 a month and offers over 200 games.
Now, Microsoft has added GTA 5 on Xbox Game Pass. The game has not been added to the PC version of the gaming service yet. Along with the game, those with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Live Gold subscription will also get access to the Grand Theft Auto Online, which is Rockstar Games’ online service that gets continuous updates with new modes and items.
Additionally, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Live Gold subscribers will get access to the recent Diamond Casino Heist DLC for The Diamond Resort and Casino. This update came on Dec. 12, adding a new mission and other smaller upgrades, such as a retro arcade business. Since its release in 2013, the GTA 5 has gotten 25 updates with Diamond Casino Heist being the latest.
“Tune in to the brand new iFruit Radio Station that launched with The Diamond Casino Heist update for Grand Theft Auto Online, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram – we’ll share the best that Los Santos has to offer,” Spurr said.
Along with GTA 5, you will also be able to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass. Further, the Game Pass users will also be able to get up to 10% off on the purchase of the Criminal Enterprise Starter pack and Shark Cash Cards. Also, the members will be able to buy the base game at 50% off from the Microsoft Store for the next few days. Moreover, the new subscribers can get Game Pass Ultimate for the first three months for just $1. This deal, however, will end today, i.e., January 6. So, hurry up!
Game Pass to support future products
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service will not just be limited to the current gen Xbox console, rather will support future products as well. This confirmation came from Microsoft’s gaming services marketing head Ben Decker, who in a recent interview with The Washington Post claimed that the subscription service is “not an experiment” and will support future products as well.
“We’re committed to Game Pass being available on the next gen,” Decker said. “It’s not an experiment on the current generation of consoles. This is a service that our members can count on being on whatever products we introduce in the future.”
Further, the executive noted that the gaming service had benefited both small and large games. Decker said that an Xbox user with a Game Pass subscription plays on average 40% more games and 30% more genres. Also, the executive claimed that the user base of some smaller games had gone up by around 30 times because of the Game Pass service.
