Google and Facebook might no longer be the favorite workplaces for job-seekers. But the US remains among countries with most welcoming workplaces. Bullying, harassment, and gender bias are still common at workplaces around the world. Research firm Kantar Worldpanel has compiled a list of countries with most welcoming workplaces in the world. Let’s check them out.

To compile the list, Kantar surveyed 18,000 people (via CNBC) between April and June this year. The research firm provided participants with a series of statements, and asked them if they had experienced one or more of the scenarios. The statements were based on metrics such as the absence of discrimination, sense of belonging, and presence of negative behavior.

Countries with most welcoming workplaces

Canada emerged as the country with most welcoming workplaces. Canadian employers actively pursue an open and diverse workplace. They also tend to have greater female participation at senior levels. This shouldn’t come as a surprise considering Canada is among the world’s most gender-equal countries. However, even the best country struggles with certain issues. About 20% Canadian employees have experienced bullying at work in the past 12 months.

Welcoming workplaces are not the only good thing about Canada. The country has high life expectancy, a world-class education system, excellent healthcare facilities, and a small population. Canadians can enjoy everything from bustling urban centers to absolute wildlife to extraordinary landscapes and natural wonders. Canada gives its citizens as well as immigrants little reason to feel unhappy or depressed.

The US occupies the second place, despite the alarming gender pay gap. It shows that the situation is much worse in other countries. Nearly two-third of American survey participants said their employers actively hire people from diverse backgrounds. About 17% American workers have experienced bullying at workplaces. That’s only slightly lower than the global average of 20%.

According to Kantar, workplace bullying is the highest in Brazil and Mexico. Even in the world’s most advanced economies, employees feel that their sexual orientation, ethnicity, and gender identity has affected their career advancement. More than one-third of LGBTQ employees feel their sexual orientation has been a roadblock in their career.

European nations such as France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy not only have the most welcoming workplaces, but also a great work-life balance. On average, employees in these countries devote less than eight hours a day a work. It means they get plenty of time for leisure, personal care, and family.

A couple of years ago, France introduced a law that gives employees the “right to disconnect” from work emails after they leave the office. In Italy, the government provides free care and entertainment services to children of its employees, allowing employees to work without having to worry about the caretaking of their children.

Germany has an incredibly generous parental leave policy of up to three years per child. Germany also has the shortest working hours among the OECD countries at 1,356 hours per year. But they tend to be more productive than employees in other countries.

Kantar Worldpanel has also ranked industries based on responses from the survey participants. Healthcare and education sectors tend to be far more welcoming than others. It’s quite surprising to see the technology industry at the bottom of the list.
