Got a new Apple Watch? Here is everything you need to know

Updated on

An Apple Watch is one of the best gifts you can give to someone provided you can afford it. It is not just a smartwatch; rather Apple is transforming it into a must-have health gadget. So, if you received an Apple Watch as a Christmas or a New Year’s gift or if you are planning to buy one, here is everything you need to know about the Apple Watch.

New Apple Watch: what you need to do first

Apple Watch Series 5 is the latest smartwatch from the company. This latest model comes with several new features, such as an always-on display, international emergency calling, a built-in compass and more. We will talk more about the features later, but the first thing that you need to do when you get a new Apple Watch is to set it up.

To use your Apple Watch, you will have to pair it up with your iPhone. To pair the Apple Watch, the first thing that you must do is install the Apple Watch app for iOS. Thereafter, you need to follow the on-screen instructions to pair your Apple Watch.

Once you have them paired, the next thing you need to do is install the apps that you want. To view the apps on your Apple Watch, it is recommended that you switch from grid view to list view. You can do this by force pressing on the app home screen.

You can set up or change the watch face as well. To do this, just force-press on your watch’s screen. The current watch face will shrink, showing the other options you have. Tap on the option you want to set as the watch face.

You should tweak the notifications settings as well. It could get frustrating if your wrist keeps on beeping and vibrating for every single notification from apps like Facebook, Instagram or more.

Apple Watch: health features

Now let’s talk about the features that your new Apple Watch is capable of performing. If you want to know everything about Apple Watch, then first on the list (after setup of course) are the health-related features. Following are the health-related features that your new Apple Watch offers:

Fitness – there are several fitness features in the Apple Watch, such as, it automatically detects certain workouts, including yoga. Moreover, it can save workout tunes from the streaming service of your choice.

Heart rate tracking – Apple Watch continuously tracks your heart rate. There is a separate app for that, and it helps you to keep track of your heart rate. Using the app, you can check your heart rate whenever you want.

Hearing health feature – this new feature came with the watchOS 6. It monitors the noise level of your environment. This new feature will send a warning if it believes the noise around you could damage your hearing.

Cycle tracking – Apple has added cycle tracking to the Apple Watch and the Apple Health app. The new feature allows women to track their periods, symptoms and more.

ECG – Apple came out with the ECG app a few months back for the Apple Watch Series 4. The app continuously monitors and analyzes the electrical patterns of your heartbeat for any potential issue.

Everything about Apple Watch: other unique features

Moving on with everything about Apple Watch, along with tracking health, you can use your Apple Watch for talking to Siri, send messages, check inbox, check sports scores and much more. Most of these features you already know about as they are available on your iPhone as well.  However, there are a few features that are unique to Apple Watch, such as:

Fall detection – this feature, as the name suggests, identifies when it thinks you have fallen. Once it detects this, it waits for a few seconds and then automatically calls emergency services.

Walkie-Talkie – this new feature allows you to use your Apple Watch as a Walkie-Talkie to talk with others using the same feature. To use this feature, just hold up your wrist, press and hold a button, say what you want and then let go of the button.

Organize Dock – by default, it reveals the ten recently used apps. You can, however, also set it to show your favorite apps. For this, you will have to use the Watch app on your iPhone. On the Watch app, tap the My Watch tab and then Dock, and then change from Recent to Favorites. You will then have to select the apps that will show up in the Dock.

Log into Mac – you can use your Apple Watch to log in to your Mac, provided you have a passcode set up on your Apple Watch and you have a Mac model that is 2013 or newer. You will have to change some settings on your Mac to do so. To allow Apple Watch, go to System Preferences on your Mac and then Security & Privacy. Now enable Apple Watch to unlock your Mac.

Check AirPods battery status – to make it convenient, Apple allows you to check the battery level of your AirPods by glancing at your wrist.
