On Saturday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed Representative Henry Cuellar over primary challenger Jessica Cisneros at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Justice Democrats Executive Director Alexandra Rojas released the following statement about Cuellar in response:

“Nancy Pelosi endorsed someone who calls himself a ‘Democrat’ but fundraises for Republicans and receives support from the NRA, private prisons, Big Oil, and the Koch Brothers, said Rojas. “While Pelosi and the DCCC back Rep. Cuellar, the Democratic Party should be embracing our most fundamental values and put voters ahead of big corporate donors. This moment in our nation's history demands leadership with clarity on where we stand on reproductive rights, gun violence, climate change, and the influence of corporate money in our democracy."

Texas’ 28th Congressional district is a deeply blue district that voted for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump by 20 points in 2016. In the previous Congress, current Congressman Henry Cuellar voted with Donald Trump nearly 70% of the time. Cuellar is also is one of only three Democrats in Congress with an “A” rating from the NRA. Recently, following the devastating shooting in El Paso, Cisneros called on her opponent to return over $20,000 in campaign donations from the NRA. Cuellar is also anti-choice and holds a 15% pro-choice rating from NARAL.

Cisneros was recently endorsed by Senator Elizabeth Warren. "The people of Texas’ 28th district are ready for systematic change and deserve a Democrat that will be on the side of working people; not the side of big money and obstructionist Republicans," said Warren. "I believe Jessica Cisneros is that fighter."
