A well-known Twitter tipster has suggested that the OnePlus 8 will arrive about the same time next year as previous models have landed in previous years. That could be a disappointing for those who were expecting an earlier release because of the extent of recent leaks about the handset.
Q2 release date expected for OnePlus 8
Tipster Max J. tweeted that the OnePlus 8 will be released in the second quarter of 2020, which would mean an official reveal between April and June.

The reason this timeline for the release date is a surprise for many is the apparent leak of the handset’s design earlier than leaks of previous-year models have come about. The designs of the OnePlus 7 line-up were leaked in March and April, only one to two months before the May 2019 release date. However, the designs of the OnePlus 8 were already supposedly leaked this month—long before the second-quarter release window that’s predicted.
Alleged design leaks
In partnership with OnLeaks, Cashkaro put together some renderings of the OnePlus 8 based on supposed leaks about the device. They said the renderings are based on engineering drawings and actual dimensions leaked from OnePlus.
The OnePlus 8 will supposedly feature a new punch-hole display that looks completely different from previous models, which feature medium or water-drop notches. The phone will supposedly have a triple-lens rear-facing camera. Wireless charging is also rumored to be coming to next year’s model. The design of the speaker has also reportedly been switched around and will supposedly feature a smoother edge along the bottom speaker.
The OnePlus 8 will reportedly have a 6.5-inch display and dimensions of 160.2 x 72.9 x 8.1 mm or 9.3 mm including the rear camera bump. The display is expected to be curved, meaning the handset could be the first one from the Chinese smartphone maker to feature a curved display.
OnLeaks also offered a similar design leak for the OnePlus 8 Pro, and 91Mobiles exclusively published renderings of the handset. Like the standard model, the Pro edition could feature a punch-hole display, which disputes the rumor about the under-display selfie camera. The screen is expected to be 6.65 inches in size and be curved like the standard variant. The Pro model is also expected to have a triple-lens camera with the lenses aligned vertically next to a 3D Time of Flight sensor, according to OnLeaks.
The speaker grille has also been redesigned, and the handset is expected to measure 165.3 x 74.4 x 8.8 mm or 10.88 mm with the camera bump.
Other rumors about the OnePlus 8
We’ve also heard a few other rumors and reports on the spec front. For example, a 90 Hz refresh rate has been confirmed for upcoming OnePlus handsets. We’re also hearing that 5G support is a possibility but not a guarantee.
