Jessica Cisneros calls for impeachment inquiry into Trump

In regards to the impeachment inquiry, “it’s time for Rep. Cuellar to put his constitutional duty ahead of his support for Trump,” says Cisneros

LAREDO, TX — Today, Jessica Cisneros, Democratic candidate for Congress in Texas’ 28th District formally announced her support for a congressional impeachment inquiry into President Trump. This announcement comes in the wake of explosive revelations that Trump abused his power by pressuring Ukrainian President Zelensky to investigate a political opponent while withholding U.S. aid as leverage. President Trump continues to obstruct justice by preventing the release to Congress of a “credible” and “urgent” complaint made by a whistleblower to the Inspector General of the intelligence community in connection to his conversation with Zelensky.

Cisneros is challenging 15-year incumbent Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar, who voted nearly 69% of the time with President Trump in the last Congress. This morning, Rep. Cuellar issued a statement reiterating his resistance to opening an impeachment inquiry.

“These unprecedented allegations represent a gross abuse of power by President Trump and his Administration. Time and time again, President Trump has directly contradicted our constitution by acting as though he is above the law. These latest allegations reconfirm what I’ve believed for a while: Congress must do its job, hold the President accountable, and begin an impeachment investigation,” said Cisneros. “Rep. Cuellar’s statement this morning proves he’d rather toe the Trump line than take a stand for our country and this community. It’s time for Rep. Cuellar to put his constitutional duty ahead of his support for Trump and call for a congressional impeachment inquiry."

Cisneros is a 26-year old immigration and human rights attorney born and raised in the border town of Laredo.
