When you are bored at work or simply prefer procrastination over productivity, you often pick up your phone and start scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter feeds. But you’ve caught up with all the social media updates again and again. You are looking for something cool to kill your boredom or just to waste some time for fun without having to go outside. Here we take a look at the top 10 coolest websites for wasting time when you are bored.
There are tons of useless websites that you can waste your time on like The Useless Web and Find the Invisible Cow. But I haven’t included them on the list because they are good only for wasting time.
The ten coolest websites I have picked will not only kill your boredom but also fascinate you, entertain you, and give you something cool to think about or discuss with your friends. You won’t regret visiting them when you just want to surf the web aimlessly.
10- Gravity Points
Created by Akimitsu Hamamuro, Gravity Points is a digital pen that allows you to add gravity centers on different parts of your screen. The tiny particles will soon start circling around the gravity point you just added. As you continue to add new gravity points, they could absorb one another to form a black hole. It’s incredible.
9- The Moth
The Moth is for people who enjoy reading, listening, or watching the fascinating personal stories of people from different parts of the world. The real-life stories will make you think about your own life and look at things from a different perspective. The Moth also has an excellent podcast that I often listen to.
8- XKCD
XKCD is one of the nerdiest and coolest websites in the world, and it’s one of my favorite. Created by incredibly geeky guy Randall Munroe, XKCD is a satirical comic series of romance, math, and language. Every comic strip will make you laugh hard. If the comic strip doesn’t, the alt text certainly will. If you are a nerd like me, you are going to love it.
7- The Oatmeal
While you are on The Oatmeal, don’t forget to check out his comic strip on running and Why Working from Home is Both Awesome and Horrible. Created by Matthew Inman, The Oatmeal is one of the funniest websites out there. The wacky drawings, punch line, and crazy stories will make you want to visit the site again and again.

This home decor site is super fun for people who like to imagine their homes in new ways. It offers design tips, inspiration, guides, how-tos, and expert advice to make your home more beautiful. Apartment Therapy runs different series such as tours of actual homes and apartments. Their before-and-after series is also worth checking out.
5- Wait But Why
Wait But Why is my favorite website. Tim Urban creates long-form articles on random topics like Why Procrastinators Procrastinate, How to Pick a Life Partner, and Why Gen Y Yuppies Are Unhappy. His writing style is informative and hilarious at the same time. And those stick figures will give you some extra laughs. Tim Urban’s articles are lengthy, but you won’t regret having spent so much time reading them. You would also want to check out his amazing TED talk.
100,000 Stars is a Google Chrome experiment. It offers interactive visualization of our galaxy with the location of 119,617 nearby stars. You can pan using your mouse and zoom in/out to see how far different stars are from our Sun. This website gives you an amazing view of outer space. You can also click on the names of different stars to learn more about them.
3- Will Robots Take My Job?
Everyone fears that sooner or later, robots are going to replace them at work. Artificial intelligence is advancing at a rapid pace, and robots have started replacing humans in many jobs. Just visit the site, enter your or someone else’s job title to see how likely humans in that occupation are to be replaced by AI/robots. It’s fun and a bit scary at the same time.
Wondering what Google looked like 20 years ago? Or how its interface has evolved over the years? Head over to Wayback Machine and go nostalgic. All you have to do is enter the website URL and pick a date to see what the website looked like on that date. You’ll see that even the most popular websites of today such as Google, Facebook, and YouTube had a terrible design years ago.
I think this is the coolest website out there. OCEARCH has created this tool to let people track all the tagged sharks swimming in waters across the globe in real time. The sharks have been given a name. You can zoom in/out to get more details on a specific shark and places they have covered in the past year.
