But these are just a few of many factors that make a company a “great place to work.” Employees also want comprehensive benefits programs and opportunities to learn and innovate. Here we take a look at the top 10 best places to work for in 2019. The ranking was compiled by Fortune magazine in collaboration with the people analytics and consulting firm Great Places To Work.
How they ranked the best companies to work for
To compile the 2019 list of the best companies to work for, Fortune magazine and Great Places To Work conducted an annual workforce study across the United States. They asked employees to anonymously respond to 60 survey questions related to their experiences at the workplace. They also took into account the company’s values, the effectiveness of leadership, and employees’ ability to contribute new ideas.
Each of the top 10 best companies to work for deeply values its people as well as its impact on the world. Only companies with more than 1,000 employees were considered for the ranking.
10- Boston Consulting Group
BCG is a leading consulting firm. It was ranked 4th last year, but has slipped to 10th place this year. More than 94% of Boston Consulting Group employees said it was a great place to work. The consulting firm supports its junior associates to ensure they excel in their careers. It offers grad school test preparations, essay feedback, and reimburses tuition fee of up to $17,386 per year.
9- Texas Health Resources
Texas Health Resources is a non-profit network of more than 300 hospitals and healthcare facilities in North Texas. The company has committed to supporting veterans. It has increased its veteran hiring by 21% in just one year. The non-profit health system also runs monthly training sessions and award ceremonies. An impressive 93% employees said it was a great place to work.
8- Ultimate Software
The Weston, Florida-based IT company provides HR management solutions to enterprise customers. About 98% Ultimate Software employees said it was a great place to work. The company has a warm and friendly culture where the chief executive and other top leaders are easily accessible. Ultimate Software gives each employee $300 per year towards their kids’ extracurricular activities. It also gives veterans an annual cash bonus.
7- Edward Jones
St. Louis-based Edward Jones is a financial services and insurance company with more than 46,000 employees. About 95% of the company’s employees are happy to be working there. According to the survey, the annual employee turnover is merely 5%, meaning most employees stay at the firm for years. Edward Jones also has a strong mentorship program to support new hires.
6- Cisco
Cisco is one of the world’s largest networking equipment makers. The California-based technology giant has been described by 94% of employees as a great place to work. It is also among the top 10 best workplaces for millennials. Cisco is always looking for new ways to engage its employees. The company has also donated $50 million to non-profit Destination: Home to address the homelessness crisis in San Francisco Bay Area.
5- Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants
San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is the second-best workplace in the Bay Area. The company operates 64 boutique hotels and 78 chef-driven restaurants across the United States. According to employees, the company has a “thoughtful” corporate culture. Employees are encouraged and rewarded for creating magical moments for guests.
4- Workday
Workday is the second-best workplace in the technology sector. Founded in 2005, Workday is a cloud-based financial management and human capital management software vendor. About 97% Workday employees said they felt good about the way the company contributes to the community. Workday focuses on employee diversity. It has a Chief Diversity Officer who monitors real-time data on the workforce. Workday co-founder and CEO Aneel Bhusri personally interviewed the first 500 employees to shape the company culture.
3- Wegmans Food Markets
The Rochester, New York-based grocery chain helps people live better, healthier lives through food. Wegmans Food Markets spends over $50 million every year on training and development of its employees. The grocery chain also spends millions of dollars a year on the higher education of its employees. “We are given endless opportunities to learn and grow,” said one employee.
2- Salesforce
Salesforce has consistently ranked among the best companies to work for. It has slipped from 1st rank in 2018 to 2nd place this year. More than 93% employees said the global CRM leader was a great place to work. Salesforce has spent close to $10 million to close the gender and race pay gap. The company focuses not only on the career objectives of its employees but also on their well-being. More than half of Salesforce offices have Mindfulness Zones.
1- Hilton
Hotel and hospitality chain Hilton has topped Fortune’s list of best companies to work for this year. Hilton has more than 5,400 properties in 106 countries. Hilton is in the “business of people serving people.” The spaces used by employees are as comfortable as the areas used by guests. An impressive 96% employees said Hilton was a great place to work, and 98% said they were made to feel welcome when they joined the company.
