(Washington, D.C.)–On Thursday, July 11th, Youth Climate Strike leaders joined hundreds of families from over 30 states gathered on the National Mall for the sixth consecutive Moms Clean Air Force Play-In for Climate Action. The annual event showcased visionary moms, Youth Climate Strikers, Members of Congress and other leaders demanding urgent action on climate. Moms stood shoulder-to-shoulder with elders and youth in full support of the global student strikes that have ignited a social movement – the likes of which we haven’t seen in decades. This intergenerational momentum is building toward the global strike for climate action on September 20th.

Alexandria Villasenor, the renowned 14-year-old climate justice activist and leading organizer for the ongoing global Fridays for Future Climate Strikes who spoke at the event, said Alexandria’s quote: “I’m proud to be on the national mall with hundreds of parents and kids demanding our lawmakers solve the climate crisis.”

Congress Members in attendance included Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL 7), Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI 12), Rep.Deb Haaland (D-NM 1), Rep. Donald McEachin (D-VA 4), Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA 1) and Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA 8)

Speakers called on political leadership at the highest levels—including the 2020 presidential candidates—to protect our families by taking the climate crisis seriously. The event focused on issues like 100% clean energy across the entire economy by 2050, climate change and air pollution.

Following the Play-In, families went to the Capitol to meet with their members of Congress to share their personal stories and urged their representatives to take immediate action on climate change for the sake of their children’s health and future.

“We are facing a climate crisis. Today, hundreds of unstoppable moms—with elders, youth and toddlers—told their elected leaders that we can’t wait any longer,” said Dominique Browning, Co-Founder and Director of Moms Clean Air Force. “We must eliminate the climate and methane pollution that is causing climate change. We need 100% clean energy, across the entire economy, by 2050. This goal is ambitious, it’s inspiring, it’s transformative, and it’s doable.”

“An entire generation is growing up in the climate crisis and they’re rising to the challenge,” added Congresswoman Kathy Castor (D-FL) who serves as Chair of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. “We need to rise with them. Everyone deserves clean air, a livable planet and a Congress that’s ready to embrace ambitious climate action.”

“Climate change is hurting our communities, and for our future—and our present—we need to take action now,” said Congressman A. Donald McEachin. “As recent reports have shown with ever-increasing urgency, it is time for us to start transforming our economy to 100% clean energy. We have a path to make it happen; now, we need to come together and raise our voices for action. Fortunately, parents from more than 25 states are in Washington today to do just that. Congressional action would improve our health, protect our vulnerable friends and neighbors on the front lines of the climate crisis, and secure our global leadership in the clean energy economy. I am inspired to stand with so many moms, kids, and advocates fighting for their families and communities.”

Following the Play-In, families headed into the Capitol to meet with their members of Congress where they shared their personal stories to urge their representatives to take action on climate to protect their children’s health and future generations. Moms Clean Air Force members engaged in more than 100 Congressional meetings.

The family-friendly Play-In for Climate Action featured kids’ activities, including a giant parachute, yoga, hula hoops, towering puppets and larger-than-life climate-themed building blocks, as well as a live performance by Latin GRAMMY award-winning bilingual children’s musician, Mister G. Hailed as a “bi-lingual rockstar” by the Washington Post, Mister G’s cross-cultural music aims to inspire a new generation of eco-activists.
