Now AT&T Cancels Galaxy Fold Preorders, Customers Get $100 Gift Card

In another blow to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold ambitions, AT&T now has canceled the preorders for the foldable phone. Last month, Best Buy also canceled Galaxy Fold preorders over the lack of information about the launch of the phone.

Why AT&T canceled Galaxy Fold preorders?

It’s been almost two months since the Galaxy Fold was supposed to arrive. Since it has not, AT&T has decided to cancel the Galaxy Fold pre-orders. However, what comes as a surprise is that AT&T decided to cancel preorders after a recent confirmation from Samsung that the new release date will be announced in a few weeks.

Also, in April after Samsung delayed the Galaxy Fold launch, AT&T said the device would ship on June 13. Now, AT&T is sending emails to the customers informing them that their reservation for the foldable phone has been canceled, according to Tom’s Guide.

“Unfortunately, Samsung delayed the release of the Fold, which means we can’t ship your phone,” the email from the carrier reads.

Moreover, AT&T is giving affected customers a $100 promotion card, which will arrive within 60 days. The gift card will be sent to the address that the customers gave when placing the order for the foldable phone.

Also, they will be allowed to place another order once Samsung announces the new release date. Funds, if any, held toward the preorder have been released, while users who were charged the full $1,980 for the phone will promptly receive a refund.

AT&T started taking pre-orders for the foldable phone on April 15. T-Mobile was planning to take orders for the device a day before the handset was scheduled to hit the stores. However, it wasn’t able to as Samsung itself delayed the launch.

Prior to AT&T’s cancellation, Best Buy also cancelled the pre-orders last month. Samsung even asked its preorder customers to reconfirm their order by the end of May or else they would get automatically canceled.

What has happened so far?

Samsung initially scheduled to ship the foldable phone in late April. However, after early reviewers started facing issues with the device, the Korean firm postponed the launch. Some of the issues raised by the early reviewers were the result of reviewers peeling the extra layer that was in place to protect the screen, while others reported dirt lodging in the gaps in its hinge. For a few, the Galaxy Fold screen just stopped working.

“The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in. Hard to know if this is widespread or not,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said previously.

Later, teardown specialist iFixit also termed the device as “alarmingly fragile.” It is believed that iFixit was able to identify the cause of the issues with the Galaxy Fold, and that is why Samsung requested it to take down its review.

Samsung reassured fans that it would fix the issues with the Galaxy Fold. Last month, there were reports that the Korean firm had fixed the issues with the handset. Moreover, the reports even detailed the steps that Samsung had taken to address the issues with the foldable phone.

Samsung reportedly has tucked the ends of the plastic film into the edges of the case to ensure that no one inadvertently peels it off. Also, the Korean firm closed the top and bottom gap of the hinge to prevent debris from getting in. A few other changes have been made to the phone as well.

Galaxy Fold – when it’s coming?

Samsung is yet to reveal a new release date for the Galaxy Fold. Recently, a company spokesperson revealed that the device would launch over “the coming weeks.” The statement from the spokesperson confirms previous reports that Samsung’s foldable phone won’t arrive this month.

Last month, Samsung’s Mobile chief DJ Koh talking of the release date for the Galaxy Fold said it “will not be too late.” What this could mean is open to interpretation.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold features an exterior screen of 4.6-inches, and when opened, a 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen (1536 x 2152 resolution) is seen. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 855, and features 12GB RAM and 512GB of storage.

Samsung’s foldable phone features a triple camera setup, including a 12MP primary camera, a 12MP telephoto camera and a 16MP Ultra-wide camera. The handset boasts a 4380mAh battery and runs on Android 9 Pie.
