Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare has a huge following online, even though the game is nearly 12 years old. Acclaimed by many gamers as the best first person shooter in history, the game has managed to maintain a huge online community for more than a decade. Call of Duty 4 Single Player Campaign
The single player campaign in Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is one of the best rated single player games to ever hit the market. With missions including helicopter air drops into cities resembling Fallujah, Iraq, a night insertion onto a cargo ship in stormy seas, and even a throwback mission following one of the leading characters during his early military career, the game is inspiring. Perhaps its most widely recognized mission is “All Ghillied Up” where the player dons a ghillie suit and crawls through an eerie town in Russia, that resembles Chernobyl. Huge radiation fields must be skirted in order to survive, and at one point you must crawl through a field where enemy soldiers are doing a foot search for intruders. The heart-pounding mission intensifies when the soldiers pass inches from your face as you lie motionless beside your commander. The mission culminates in a single sniper shot from a .50 caliber Barrett rifle and a mad dash to escape the enemy.
Multiplayer Community
While the single player campaign is intense and captivating, the multiplayer side of things is equally tantalizing. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare has a huge online community of players, developers, and designers. There are thousands of servers where enthusiasts can engage in free-for-all style battles, shooting anyone in the map. There are also many different versions of team play, where you can compete for the most kills in a round, or find and destroy specific targets. The servers can be found directly in the game menu, as well as by a simple Google search. Players can connect directly through the in game console.
There are a large number of “clans,” or teams of friends in the COD 4 community. These clans often run their own private servers, and many times engage in clan wars with other clans. These groups range from names like “[OGHF]” to “[CIA],” and each Call of Duty 4 clan has its own special perks or mods on their server. Many of them also use TeamSpeak or Discord for in game voice coms to make their team more effective in battle.
Mods
The modifications, or mods, available for the original Call of Duty 4 game are almost too many to number. With some mods being designed to simply enhance the realism of the game by eliminating radar or making your enemy harder to find, others add an exotic feel. There are mods that allow you to take on the persona of Star Wars characters, operate the weapons on an AC-130, and even use WW2 styled weapons to fight.
Custom Maps
The multiplayer community has also birthed the growth of custom map developers. There are many custom designed maps for Call of Duty 4 that can be downloaded from various websites, or directly from the servers that currently run them. The maps include both fantasy settings, and real world scenery and cities that have been remastered for the game.

In 2016 Raven Software released a remastered version of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. This edition of the game was also published by Activision and was initially released as part of the Call of Duty Infinite Warfare bundle. Fans flocked to the release, and many of the younger generation who had never played the original COD4 found a great new pastime in a decade old game. The graphics in the 2007 release are definitely behind the times, as we see releases like Arma 3 and DCS World. However, they are still good enough to make the game enjoyable.
Multiple Platforms
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare was released on multiple platforms. While the PC platform has the most active online community, Playstation and X-Box also have a large number of fans.
