Far Cry New Dawn And More Of The Hottest Games In 2019

Updated on

Smooth Gaming‘ is a new column to ValueWalk which will discuss various aspects of the video game industry. From AAA titles, business aspects, and independent developers who often go under-reported. ‘Smooth Gaming’ will take a multi-pronged look at the world of gaming. This week we discuss the hottest video game releases such as Far Cry New Dawn and Mortal Kombat 11 which are expected in 2019.

With the great critical and financial success of the video games industry in 2018, this year looks to continue the momentum with a number of highly anticipated titles scheduled for release. So without further delay, let’s discuss some of the games right now.

Mortal Kombat 11

Why not start with the title that spurred the narrative of last weeks Smooth Gaming entry? Mortal Kombat 11 is the latest title from NetherRealm Studios and follows the events of Mortal Kombat X. Fans of the fighting genre; which I’m honestly not a huge part of, don’t need much introduction to this legendary franchise which has spawned television shows and movies. Even Glacier (the gimmick given to Ray Lloyd) of World Championship Wrestling in the late 1990s was based on Mortal Kombat character, Sub-Zero.

The game is projected to sell millions of copies and continue the streak off box office hits for the franchise. The game is set for release on April 23rd of this year.

In Raiden we trust.

The Division 2

The action, roleplay, survival Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is a sequel to its massively successful namesake. The Massive Entertainment (no pun intended, they picked the name) development team took community critique seriously and are planning on adding far more content at game’s release than the first game of the series.

With a loyal community, recognizable brand, and the ability to market the title, there is little that could keep the game from becoming a financial success.

The game is based in Washington DC and is currently slated for release on March 15th.

Far Cry New Dawn

Far Cry New Dawn is the latest Far Cry spin-off, yet it follows the canon ending of Far Cry 5, which is noted for amazing social commentary. Ubisoft has made a mint off of the Far Cry franchise, so the dip into sensitive social and political issues was appreciated by myself. The critical and financial success of the title is what led to the continuation of the story.

Without mentioning any spoilers, Far Cry New Dawn is based several years after the events of Far Cry 5 and is expected to dive into the events of the previous title. Far Cry New Dawn is highly likely to further explore social commentary.

The Far Cry New Dawn game is scheduled for release soon on February 15th.

Left Alive

Square Enix has the luxury of owning the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts franchises. That financial safety net allows them to take risks. Left Alive is a dip back into the Front Mission universe, which hasn’t had nearly the success of the aforementioned properties.

Left Alive has ‘bust’ potential, but it could also become a sleeper hit if the game is met with both expert and fan praise. If the title flops, it could be the last time Square Enix decides to tap Front Mission lore. Shooters and war game enthusiasts should closely read reviews and dive into the previous titles within the franchise.

The game is scheduled to drop in North America on March 5th.

Anthem

Why would Election Arts (EA) let Mass Effect have all the fun when it comes to shooters based on galaxy level community ecosystem? While EA doesn’t always get everything right, the financial might of the studio makes ambitious game titles interesting for gamers.

The co-op nature of the game will definitely appeal to fans and those who love the lore and gameplay of the Mass Effect franchise will likely to give the game a go.

Anthem should produce good financial numbers, but will it also be critically successful. We’ll see.

The game is slated for release soon on February 22nd.

Devil May Cry 5

Who doesn’t enjoy a little hacking and slashing of demons to pass the time? Well, Capcom is delivering that opportunity with Devil May Cry 5. The game is a continuation of the narrative (3, 1, Animated Series, 4, 2, 5 is the chronological order for those wondering at home) that ignores an alternate reality developed in DmC: Devil May Cry — which was thought to be a complete reboot of the series.

Long-time fans of the franchise will be glad Capcom didn’t completely abandon the original lore. DmC did well financially but wasn’t the huge success they were hoping for. With sleek graphics and not making the gross mistake of having in-game purchases affect progression, Devil May Cry 5 looks like it will be another solid entry into the series.

The game is scheduled to drop on March 8th.
