The Popularity Of Red Dead Redemption 2

From the Rockstar Press release after the release of ‘Red Dead Redemption 2:’

Rockstar Games is proud to announce that the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 has achieved the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment. With over $725 million in worldwide retail sell-through during its first three days, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time next to Rockstar Games’ previously released title, Grand Theft Auto V, which achieved over $1 billion in retail sell-through in three days.

“Only one entertainment property has ever topped that initial three-day total: Grand Theft Auto V, the last game made by Rockstar. (That game made $1 billion in three days.),” Fortune reported, “The critically acclaimed open world action game set in the old west set a number of records in its opening weekend. It was the most-ordered full game in the history of PlayStation’s digital storefront and also posted the most day-one and three-day sales totals,” they would continue.

Future Of The Gaming Industry

The video game industry is currently undergoing on boom period, expecting to exceed over $90 billion in worth by 2020. The amount of money being spent in gaming is also staggering. According to Newzoo:

We forecast that 2.3 billion gamers across the globe will spend $137.9 billion on games in 2018. This represents an increase of +13.3% from the year before, or $16.2 billion. Digital game revenues will take 91% of the global market with $125.3 billion. Mobile gaming will continue to be the largest segment following 10 years of double-digit growth since the first iPhone was launched in 2007. In total, mobile revenues will grow +25.5% year on year to reach $70.3 billion. This means that for the first time, more than half of all game revenues will come from the mobile segment. Smartphones will account for 80% of this, or $56.4 billion, with the remaining 20% coming from tablets. Console gaming is the second-largest segment generating $34.6 billion in 2018, while PC games will bring in $32.9 billion.

With gaming becoming mainstream, it’s likely reporting from legacy outlets will likely change their attitudes towards the industry as a whole.
