Another Serious Bug Found In The Windows 10 October Update

Updated on

The Windows 10 October update came with more bugs than one can imagine. The update initially stopped rolling out on Oct. 6 after unintentionally deleting some users’ files. Microsoft was quick to fix the issue and even offered help with restoring files. However, new bugs which compromise system performance have now been found in the Windows 10 October update.

The new data loss bug caused Microsoft to take this issue more seriously. The company announced that it probably won’t be fixed until November. Microsoft moderator M. Hamer explained the problem in a forum post (emphasis theirs):

“There is a known issue in the Windows 10 October Update where the consent prompt ‘Do you want to replace these files’ is missing when copying contents from a .ZIP file.

With the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, if you copy or move files from a .ZIP file (without first ‘extracting’ the contents) in to [sic] a new destination folder that contains duplicate filenames or is write-protected, you don’t get a ‘Do you want to replace these files’ prompt. It will appear that the files were overwritten, when in fact the copy action for those files is not executed and files have not been overwritten.”

While this issue may not sound as serious and may even appear boring, it’s extremely serious. If you work with .zip files, you risk losing them. The forum agent goes on to warn the community not to work with this type of file:

“Important: Do not attempt to Cut and Paste items from a compressed (.zip) folder. This may result in unintentionally deleting items that may not be recoverable. Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available in early November for this issue.”

This issue is not anywhere near as bad as the one that occurred earlier this month, which automatically deleted entire folders during the update process. However, because of this new bug, we recommend not installing the Windows 10 October update yet, so avoid clicking the “Check for Updates” button any time soon. If you have already downloaded and installed the Windows 10 October update, avoid working with .zip files using Windows File Explorer’s built-in ZIP tool. We’re hearing that third-party tools such as WinRAR or 7-Zip don’t seem to be affected by this problem, so use one of them until Windows works this bug out.
