Six Inconvenient Facts

Updated on

Let us consider six facts, each of which greatly impacts on the outcome of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s accession to the Supreme Court.

  1. In the early 1980s, three teenagers – Christine Blassey, Kavanaugh, and his friend, Mark Judge – travelled in the same affluent social circles, and attended the same parties, where there was often heavy drinking.
  2. Now, thirty-six years later, Blassey claims that one of these parties, Kavanaugh forced her into an upstairs bedroom, and with the door locked and Judge looking on, he attempted to sexually assault her.
  3. Although she may not have told even her family members or closest friends about this traumatic incident, even today, dozens of people who knew Blassey, Kavanaugh, and Judge can recall having heard something about such an incident taking place.
  4. Blassey, her lawyers and Senate Democrats have demanded that the F.B.I. do a full investigation to determine the veracity of her accusations and Kavanaugh’s and Judge’s denials.
  5. Kavanaugh has stated his determination to clear his name.
  6. Neither Kavanaugh nor President Donald Trump, who nominated him, support an investigation by the F.B.I.

None of these facts is in dispute. But what can an F.B.I. investigation possibly uncover that will help determine whether Blassey or Kavanaugh is telling the truth, let alone clear his name?

Take another look fact number 3. If Blassey had indeed told her family and friends about this incident, and they had spread the word, if she had been lying, then Judge Brett Kavanaugh would have been unfairly slandered. And he would now have all the more reason to demand an F.B.I. investigation.

But if Blassey had told no about the incident for many years, then who did? Well, there were just two other people in the room with her.

So while it would appear that Judge Brett Kavanaugh would want to make every effort to clear his good name, just maybe he may be thinking that it might not be such a good idea to get the F.B.I. involved. And his White House sponsor apparently agrees.
