With the first trillion dollar company tipped to appear in 2018, RS Components have discovered the biggest company in every country according to market capitalisation, and some of the results may surprise you. From HSBC in the UK to clothing giant Inditex in Spain, a wide range of sectors dominate the top company spots for each country around the world.

This map by RS Components breaks down the world’s biggest companies by industry: banking and finance, oil, gas and energy, pharmaceuticals, retail and consumer goods, steel and mining, telecoms and other.

The piece shows how the oil, gas and energy sectors rule Europe with 40% of countries listing the biggest company in that industry including France, Italy, Portugal, Ukraine and Poland.

In Asia, the technology sector makes up 15% of the continents biggest companies with global titans like Tencent in China and Samsung in South Korea taking the top spots.

Although both of these industries enjoy billions in profits every year, it is the banking and finance industry who rule the world as some of the companies with the biggest market caps. Over a third of the countries featured on the map have a company in this sector listed as their biggest.
