The Last of Us: Part 2 was announced and ever since, the web has been flooded with different rumors suggesting different scenarios. Different rumors also suggest that the protagonist from the first game, Joel, is dead. That being said, fans didn’t see Joel anywhere during the Last of Us Part 2 presentation at E3 2018, while the other character Ellie was in the center of focus. Even though it’s still not confirmed for sure whether Joel is dead or not, we can’t help but wonder if Joel is a playable character for the sequel of The Last of Us.
As per the report by IGN, Neil Druckmann, creative director for The Last of Us: Part 2 answered the question of whether Joel is a playable character. During a closed doors session at E3, Druckmann said that, “Ellie is the only playable character in the game.” There are many rumors suggesting that Joel is dead, and the most popular one was published on Reddit.
That being said, this statement adds up to the already existing rumors that Joel is dead. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that Druckmann is purposely making fans believe that Joel won’t appear in the next game as a playable character, but could be playable when the full game is out during a small portion of the game, similarly to how Ellie was in the original game.
It’s still unknown as to when Naughty Dog decided to make Ellie the only playable character in The Last of Us: Part 2. However, it could have been the company’s plan all along. Nevertheless, it’s known that Ellie was very dominant during the game’s marketing campaign since the game was initially announced, while Joel was almost nowhere to be seen. Also, fans have known for a while that Ellie would be the main protagonist, according to Polygon. Nevertheless, it’s surprising that she’s the only playable character.
Even though Ellie is so far the only known playable character in The Last of Us: Part 2, other characters will undoubtedly be playable in the game’s multiplayer mode. It’s still uncertain what to expect from the game’s multiplayer mode, mentioned by Polygon, but we can assume that it’s similar to how it was presented in the first game. That means that we’re likely to see the traditional deathmatch-style game modes with the possibility to add social features.
As the release date of The Last of Us: Part 2 approaches, we will soon get to see if Joel is a playable character or not, as well as see how the multiplayer mode works. Right now The Last of Us: Part 2 is in development and will come out on PlayStation 4.
