While iOS 12 is currently undergoing beta testing, the iOS 11.4.1 beta 2 build has just released in what will likely be one of the last updates of the iOS 11 generation.
We previously made predictions about what would be featured in the iOS 11.4.1 beta 2 release, and it seems as if we were generally heading in the right direction.
For those who aren’t aware, iOS 11.4.1 is generally considered a maintenance release. While iOS 11.4 added some exciting new features, this upcoming update is largely intended to increase stability and performance of the operating system as we move closer to the release of iOS 12.
At this point, you shouldn’t expect more revolutionary changes to ship with any sort of iOS 11 update. With WWDC 2018, we received exciting news about iOS 12. It’s likely that any new developments will be saved for that release, which should hit our phones in the coming months.
If we receive any new builds or patches up until that point, you should expect them to be similar to iOS 11.4.1 beta 2 — largely stability and performance improvements that refine what is already present rather than reinventing the wheel. This is looking more and more likely considering that the iOS 12 beta has already been released, as adding new features to an older operating system while the newest is already in testing would be ill-advised.
iOS 11 unfortunately earned a bit of a negative reputation for performance issues that outshined any new features, so it’s likely that Apple is ready to wash their hands of this generation and charge full speed ahead toward iOS 12. With a new design philosophy focused around stability and quality over quantity and speed, it’s likely that the iOS 12 update will be much more stable as a whole.
How To Download iOS 11.4.1 Beta 2
If you are a member of the Apple Developer Program with a correct configuration profilefor iOS 11 betas, you can download the iOS 11.4.1 beta 2 OTA update by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update.
If you’d prefer to install iOS 11.4.1 Beta 2 via an IPSW file, you can download the required file from the Apple Developer Program website at developer.apple.com. The exact details of the new beta should come out as developers get their hands on the update and can discern what exactly changed with this new release.
Accompanying the iOS 11.4.1 Beta 2 were the release of the second beta for both macOS 10.13.6 and tvOS 11.4.1.
