LG G7 ThinQ Gets EEC Certification Ahead Of May 2 Launch Date

Updated on

The LG G7 ThinQ unveiling is just a couple of weeks away. The Korean company is going to rebrand its G-series flagship to highlight its AI-focused features. Reliable tipsters, supply chain leaks, and LG executives have revealed pretty much everything about the upcoming flagship. As the LG G7 ThinQ launch date nears, the device has started making appearances on certification sites.

Folks at LetsGoDigital have discovered that the G7 ThinQ has been certified in Russia by the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), which is the Russian equivalent of the FCC. The EEC has also certified another LG device called Q7, which is expected to be an affordable version of the LG G7 ThinQ. Both the smartphones were certified on April 12th. The certifications would remain valid through 2023.

The certification site did not reveal much in terms of the phone’s specifications. It does mention that both the LG G7 ThinQ and the Q7 would run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. We may see the next-gen G-series flagship passing through more certification sites as its launch date nears.

On Tuesday, reliable tipster Evan Blass shared a promotional photo of the LG G7 ThinQ on Twitter. It shows a sleek smartphone with a top cutout similar to the iPhone X. Unlike Apple’s flagship, the G7 ThinQ retains a slim bezel at the bottom. According to the rumor mill, the G7 ThinQ would sport a 6.01-inch M+ LCD screen with a 19:9 aspect ratio and Quad HD+ resolution. LG Electronics is fully aware that not all users like the notch. So, it will give you the option to hide the notch through software. The feature will generate a bar at the top of the display to black out the notch.

The ThinQ branding suggests that AI features will be at the core of the upcoming flagship. According to Android Headlines, the AI will be “tightly integrated” with all the key features of the device including the camera. The AI Cam will offer “enhanced filter options.” It will automatically detect the subject and adjust the color, saturation, and contrast of the image. It will also automatically adjust the exposure to offset against direct sunlight.

The LG G7 ThinQ is said to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset and 6GB RAM. It would offer base internal storage of 64GB besides a microSD card slot for external memory expansion. The device would pack a decent 3,000mAh battery, which should last at least a full day of normal usage.

In terms of camera, the LG G7 ThinQ would feature two 16-megapixel lenses on the back, which is an improvement from the LG G6’s two 13MP sensors. The G7 camera would feature something called “Superpixels” that will help the device take clearer and brighter pictures in low-light conditions. It will identify the dark environments and respond by combining pixels into a “Superpixel.” The G7 camera will also offer 10-bit HDR compatibility.

To enhance the audio experience, the LG G7 ThinQ would feature a “Boombox Speaker” that would bounce audio signals internally before outputting them to the user. The phone is also said to have a larger speaker than the G6. LG’s upcoming flagship would come equipped with Google Assistant. It would have a new physical button on the side to activate an AI-based voice assistant.

LG Electronics has told media that it would unveil the LG G7 ThinQ at an event in New York City on May 2nd and in Seoul on May 3rd. Considering there is a 13-hour time difference between Seoul and New York, the two events could take place simultaneously. The phone is expected to go on sale in mid-May.

The LG G7 ThinQ will be a make or break smartphone for the Korean company. LG’s smartphone business has been incurring losses for the last several years. The LG G5, G6, and V30 have failed to revive its fortunes. In the span of just a few years, LG has lost much of the ground to Samsung and Chinese Android vendors such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus.
