Will iPhone SE 2 Have iPhone X Like Notch? New Video Suggests So

Updated on

Since the launch of the Apple iPhone SE in 2016, rumors have been making the rounds on the next version of this handset – allegedly the iPhone SE 2. Several reports have speculated on the expected specs for this comparatively low-cost iPhone. However, a new video suggests a completely bizarre theory – the new SE version would have similar styling as the iPhone X.

This video (shared by Japanese site Macotakara) surfaced on Thursday showing specifically a device which is a cross between an iPhone SE and an iPhone X that many believe could be the iPhone SE 2. A caption in the video even asks if this is the iPhone SE 2. Many, however, see it as a fake Android clone, which are often found in China.

The handset shown in the video has an iPhone X like notch and edge-to-edge display. Further, the handset in the video is shown with a vertical rear camera in the body, similar to the current iPhone SE. In the 30-second video, a user is seen unlocking the phone, swiping through the home screen once and opening Settings. The video has nothing substantial to prove if it’s even an iOS device.

In addition, it is also very illogical for Apple to give the iPhone SE 2 a design that is similar to the iPhone X. A design with a notch, which includes Face ID’s TrueDepth camera, would substantially raise the price of the phone. Also, adding iPhone X features to the cheapest iPhone would backfire by giving less incentive to the buyers to go for the premium device if they could get the same features at less cost.

For a long time, there have been rumors of Apple working on a second-generation iPhone SE. It must be noted that none hinted that the device would have iPhone X like styling. Even trusted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo never said anything similar to that about the SE 2 design. Kuo, however, did say that the iPhone SE 2 – if it is in works – would not come with design changes as Apple is busy working on three iPhones for the September 2018 release, notes MacRumors.

In fact, there are conflicting rumors on the release date or even the existence of the iPhone SE 2. Some rumors say that the handset would launch in the first half of this year, while others expect a release sometime later this year, or even next year. A recent report from a Chinese website claimed that the handset would launch at the WWDC event in June.

A WWDC launch is highly unlikely. Apple has never introduced a new handset at the event since 2010. Also, the company is reportedly working on three new iPhones including a lower-cost option. So, revealing another new cheaper handset doesn’t make sense.

On the other hand, some even believe that Apple would completely ditch the handset. There are reports that the SE version has not garnered enough sales as users prefer bigger screens for watching movies, playing games and browsing the web. Separately, there are also reports that Apple is working on a low-end iPhone, which would launch only in India and China.

Since its release in March 2016, the iPhone SE has not had any major upgrade except for a storage bump in 2017. So, if Apple is indeed considering a second iteration of the model, it should come with significant changes. Talking of the rumored specs, the iPhone SE 2 is expected to sport the A11 Bionic chip, the same chip that powers the iPhone X and iPhone 8. The current iPhone SE uses the A9 chip, which is used in the iPhone 6S.

Further, the handset is expected to come with 2GB RAM and 32GB and 128GB storage options. Also, there are rumors that the handset would get a glass back panel and support wireless charging. The battery could also get a slight raise from 1640mAh to 1700mAh. Talking of the camera, the second-gen version could get the 7MP FaceTime camera with Retina Flash, compared to the 5MP FaceTime camera currently.

Separately, Apple is expected to unveil three iPhones this year – a second-generation iPhone X with a 5.8-inch OLED display, an iPhone X Plus with a 6.5-inch display and a lower-cost iPhone with a 6.1-inch LCD display. There are reports that all three handsets would have edge-to-edge displays with minimal bezels along with the TrueDepth Camera system for Face ID.
