The Galaxy S9 battery capacity leaked online on Thursday, shared as part of replacement battery listings from smartphone repair service Union Repair.

As mentioned above, the Galaxy S9 battery leak comes courtesy of the Hong Kong-based smartphone repair service, Union Repair. Apparently, the Galaxy S9 battery, as well as that found in the Galaxy S9 Plus, will be the same capacity as their predecessors. While an upgrade in battery capacity would be nice, the Galaxy S8 already lasts all day on a single charge, so it’s clear that upgrading the power capacity isn’t necessarily a priority. The Galaxy S9 battery will feature a 3000 mAh capacity while the S9 Plus will have a slightly longer battery life at 3500 mAh. Reports suggest that neither battery will be removable, but they will feature Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charging technology that will top up your device far faster than traditional charging, as well as support for wireless charging. Both batteries that were prematurely listed by Union Repair seem to be officially branded as assembled by Samsung SDI’s Vietnamese division, so it’s likely that the information regarding the Galaxy S9 battery is legitimate.
Android Headlines reports that the nominal voltage of the batteries is listed as 3.85V as well as a charge voltage of 4.4V – once again identical to the specifications included in the Galaxy S8. There are no further details that were directly released by the leak, but the brick-like battery does suggest that either they will be used solely in the Snapdragon 845 versions of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, or that the Exynos 9810 rumors are false. Android Headlines suggests that if the Exynos 9810 were to be included in the phone, the batteries in the units would be L-shaped and feature a larger value than the leaked devices.
Regardless of the fact that the Galaxy S9 battery may not be a massive improvement over the S8, it will likely perform far better due to the inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845’s energy efficiency. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are set to be announced on February 25th in Barcelona, and will hit the stores by March 16th following a preorder period.

Although the Galaxy S9 will perform better despite the lack of improvements with the battery capacity, the phone isn’t a massive departure from the Galaxy S8 in general. The phone looks almost exactly the same and has very similar features. The main draw of the Galaxy S9 is the improved camera features which are sure to appeal to the majority of their customers, but is that really enough for the new generation of phones? For the past few generations, Samsung has released phones that were improvements over their predecessors yet largely iterative. While the company certainly has the ability to innovate, as evidenced by the in-progress development of the foldable Galaxy X, the Galaxy S9 will be more of what we’ve seen before. Let’s hope that the impending release gives us something more to be excited about, despite a similar Galaxy S9 battery capacity.
