Sony Reveals Design Of New Dualshock 4 Controllers

Updated on

Sony has released a number of special edition controllers for the PlayStation 4, and the gaming company has just announced their upcoming Dualshock 4 controllers – Available in two different color options: Steel Black and Midnight Blue. The controllers are slated for a March release date, and are available for preorder now.

While the new Dualshock 4 controllers aren’t branded with logos or feature a flashy design, the colors are beautiful and they will make a welcome addition to Sony’s controller lineup. While these new controllers are more understated in their design, that’s probably a good thing considering how the most recent special edition Dualshock 4 controllers turned out, with the Destiny 2 and PlayStation FC receiving mixed reviews. Many people took issue with the quality of graphics that were prominently displayed on both the grip and touchpads, so they are quite pleased with the implementation of these upcoming Dualshock 4 controllers.

The two new colors that Sony is introducing today are Steel Black and Midnight Blue. While the Midnight blue controller is a brand new offering from the company, the Steel Black is actually a design we’ve seen before. While the overall layout of the controller is original, we did see a release with the same color scheme back in 2016.

However, despite a Steel Black Dualshock 4 release back a couple of years ago, that launch was before the reveal of the PlayStation Slim, making the design of the older controller feel a little bit outdated. The release of the new Steel Black controller offers the new design in the form of the revamped controller. While the new PlayStation controller was not a massive departure from the previous model, it does feel a little more updated for the modern aesthetic and feels a little more comfortable to use with the improved touchpad and direct USB functionality. More options for colors and logos on a better-optimized design are always welcome, and the Steel black and Midnight Blue colorations offer two more beautiful options to the growing lineup of custom Dualshock 4 controllers.

Controller Release Date

While the Midnight Blue and Steel Black Dualshock 4 controllers were announced today, we won’t see the release until March. We don’t have an exact date for the United States release at this point, but we do know that they will arrive in Europe on March 7. It would make sense that the controllers would launch at a similar time in the US, but with no confirmation we can’t be sure outside of a March release date. Each controller will cost $64.99, and there’s currently a preorder page setup to allow you to make sure you have access to the Steel Black or Midnight Blue options at launch.
