Nintendo surprised many earlier this week by unveiling the Nintendo Labo, its build-it-yourself cardboard kits. The Japanese company unveiled three kits – two different packs of cardboard sheets and software, and the third consists of stickers and colored tape.  These kits will be available in April, but right now, you can preorder Nintendo Labo kits on Amazon to get them on the launch date.

Nintendo Labo kits – what do they include?

The Nintendo Labo kits are a “new line of interactive build-and-play experiences that combine DIY creations with the magic of Nintendo Switch,” Nintendo said.

The main attraction is the Toy-Con 2: Robot Kit costing $80. It includes materials for making a cardboard backpack and headset. It involves more gameplay, and allows you to make a crazy cardboard mech suit for yourself. In all, this kit would make you feel like a cardboard mech pilot.

Along with the software, the Robot Kit includes: Cardboard sheet x 19, Cardstock sheets x 4, Eyelet set (gray) x 10, Eyelet set (orange) x 2, Orange string x 2, Blue string x 2, Reflective sticker sheet x 1, Gray canvas straps (large) x 1, Gray canvas straps (medium) x 1, Gray canvas straps (small) x 2.

The Toy-Con 1: Variety Kit costs $70 and includes materials to develop a Toy-Con Piano, Toy-Con Fishing Rod, Toy-Con RC Car, Toy-Con Motorbike and Toy-Con House. The Variety Kit box includes: Cardboard sheet x 28, String (orange) x 1, String (blue) x 1, Rubber band (large) x 2 + spares, Rubber band (small) x 6 + spare, Reflective sticker sheet x 3, Eyelet set (gray) x 1, Eyelet set (blue) x 1 and Sponge sheet x 3. It also comes with its own software.

Both of these Nintendo Labo kits, along with the modular cardboard pieces, come with games to interact with what you have created using the kits. Further, the games also guide the users through the building process using on-screen prompts and animations.

All you need to do is buy these Kits, pop out the pieces outlined on the cardboard and follow the instructions to craft the LABO product. The end result is an interactive session with something that you yourself have created.

“With each Nintendo Labo kit, kids can transform modular sheets of cardboard – specially designed to interact with the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con controllers — into creations called Toy-Con,” the Japanese company said.

If you preorder Nintendo Labo kits now, you would have your Nintendo LABO robot on launch day. Both the kits will be released on April 20. The Customization Kit costs $10 and can be purchased directly from Nintendo, notes IGN. The kit allows you to truly customize your Labo creations and includes stickers, decorative tape, and stencils.

Since its launch in March 2017, Nintendo Switch sales have been exceptionally strong. Last month, the Japanese company revealed that it had already sold over 10 million units of the console. However, speaking to the Japanese newspaper Mainichi, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said that the second year will be the main test for the Switch, adding that the company aims to add more users, including those “who barely touch game consoles.” This is where Nintendo Labo could help the company.
