Nokia 9 Case Renders Show Off Dual LED Flash, Slim Bezels

Updated on

The official unveiling of Nokia 9 is only about a month away. HMD Global has confirmed that it would hold a press event on February 25, just a day before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off in Barcelona. HMD Global’s chief product officer Juho Sarvikas has told his fans that they could expect the company’s MWC event “to be awesome.” Ahead of the phone’s official unveiling, Nokia 9 case renders have appeared online.

Nokia 9 case renders show dual LED flash, curved display edges

The Nokia 9 case renders show off its design and key features. Many of the design characteristics have already been spotted in previous leaks. Folks at ConceptLeaks.com have posted a picture of Nokia 9 with a protective silicone case. It confirms that the phone would feature a vertically-oriented dual camera system on the back panel. The fingerprint scanner is placed below the rear camera module, at a safe distance to prevent users from accidentally smearing the camera lenses while trying to unlock the handset.

Nokia 9 will also have a dual LED flash. The front panel still has bezels at the top and bottom, though the screen seems to curve around the edges. The front camera lens appears to be placed towards the left edge on the top bezel. Smartphone vendors tend to provide the design mockups of their unannounced phones to accessories makers to ensure that cases are available in the market at the time of launch.

Separately, popular smartphone accessories maker Terrapin has started taking orders for Nokia 9 cases on its website as well as on Amazon UK. The design of Terrapin’s cases is similar to that posted by Concept Leaks. Back in November, case maker HualuBro had also listed its cases on Amazon UK with similar design elements. The consistency in the design language of three different Nokia 9 case renders suggests that this could be the phone’s final design or pretty close to it.

Nokia 9 rumored features and specs

Nokia 9 will be HMD Global’s premium offering that would compete against the iPhone X, Galaxy S9, and other flagship smartphones from rivals. It is expected to cost a little more than the Nokia 8. The upcoming flagship recently made an appearance on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) site. The FCC listing revealed almost all the details of the phone.

It would feature a bezel-less 5.5-inch OLED screen with 2K resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. HMD Global would source the display panels from LG Display. Its dual camera setup consists of a 12-megapixel and a 13-megapixel sensor, one of which is expected to be the telephoto lens. HMD Global uses Carl Zeiss lenses on the Nokia 8, and is expected to source Nokia 9 camera lenses from the same supplier.

According to the FCC listing, the Nokia 9 would feature 128GB of internal storage, a decent 3,250mAh battery, and a Snapdragon 835 processor. The use of Snapdragon 835 might disappoint some Nokia fans now that the Snapdragon 845 has been announced. The rumor mill expects the Nokia 9 to carry forward Nokia 8’s Bothie camera and OZO surround sound technology. The Bothie camera is a gimmick that allows you to shoot photos and videos with both the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

The FCC listing did not mention the phone’s RAM size, but the rumor mill claims Nokia 9 would come with 6GB RAM. The device would run pure Android Oreo out of the box, which means better security, faster updates, and no bloatware. A few reports claim that Nokia 9 could ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, just like Apple and Google have dropped it from their flagship models.

HMD Global has multiple smartphones in store for the MWC event. Nokia 9 is just one of them. Other phones that the company is expected to unveil next month are the Nokia 3310 4G, Nokia 7 Plus, and a budget Nokia 1. The Nokia 1 would be part of Google’s Android Go program. It would feature just 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage, and would be sold in emerging countries. HMD’s event would take place on the same day Samsung is set to announce the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.

Meanwhile, NokiaPowerUser reports that Finnish company was working on a Nokia 10 flagship with a penta-camera setup on the back. The phone is unlikely to launch at the MWC, though it is expected to arrive by the end of this year. The rear camera module would consist of five lenses and an LED flash in a circular ring. The fingerprint sensor will be placed below the camera module on the rear panel.
