Recently Revealed Report Suggests Nokia 9 Dual Lens Camera

Updated on

Although we don’t have a ton of information about the upcoming Nokia 9, HMD Global may have just accidentally released information that suggests that we’ll see a Nokia 9 dual lens camera.

Nokia 9 Dual Lens Camera

A recent update to the camera app included in the Nokia 5 Android Orea beta highlight some specifications that no current Nokia phone is capable of. The main giveaway for a Nokia 9 dual lens camera is the mention of a 2x telephoto zoom and a wide-angle option. Both of these features usually require a dual lens setup, suggesting that we may see the feature included in the upcoming flagship.

The Nokia 5 has a single-lens setup, which rules it out on that phone. Even the Nokia 8, despite featuring two lenses, is incapable of using those features. The 8 uses technology to combine images from both a color and monochrome lens but is lacking the telephoto zoom and wide-angle options.

Nokia 9 Features and Release Date

It’s very likely that both features will be coming to a new phone, and the Nokia 9 probably the more likely candidate. Considering that it will be the premier flagship from the company and that an announcement is anticipated soon, it would definitely make sense. A new Nokia 8 (2018) will also potentially be announced on that date, so there’s a possibility that the 8 could include the features too. It would be shocking if the 8 included the features and the 9 didn’t, however, so it’s much more reasonable to expect that the phone will be included either in the 9 or in both phones.

This isn’t the first suggestion that the Nokia 9 will include a dual lens camera, and previous rumors suggest that it might have two 22 MP lenses — much more than the Nokia 8’s 13. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that an increase in megapixels doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality photos. The Nokia 8’s dual RGB and monochrome lenses lead to excellent performance in low light conditions. If the Nokia 9 dual lens camera combines these sensors with a higher megapixel lens, it will definitely be an upgrade. If the separate RGB and monochrome sensors are omitted, however, it may not be as big of an upgrade as it looks at first glance. If it’s true that the phone will launch in January, we’ll have a confirmation to back up or refute these rumors sooner rather than later.

As far as other rumored specifications go, the phone will likely include a A 5.5-inch QHD OLED screen display, which suggests a 1440 x 2560 resolution — pretty standard for a high-end flagship. A source has told Techradar that the Nokia 9 will have an all-metal body and that it will likely be IP68 certified, so we can expect that it will be dust proof and water resistant up to 1.5 deep for 30 minutes.

Nokia 9’s Large Battery

The battery is rumored to have a 3800 mAh capacity, which is a pretty large charge that will easily last most users all day. Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 also ensures you’ll be able to top up your phone quicker than with the competition. Considering the phone’s smaller dimensions at around 5.5 inches, this information may not be accurate. Still, if Nokia manages to pack in that much capacity into a small phone, we’ll be pleasantly surprised.

As far as power goes, a Snapdragon 835 chipset, Qualcomm’s latest processor, will be included with the phone. We’ll also likely see 4 GB, 6GB, or 8 GB of RAM with Android 7 or later software. Although these specs are by no means confirmed, that would put the power over even luxury flagships like the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and the Samsung Galaxy S8 — both of which only include 4 GB of RAM.

While rumors are definitely not necessarily an indication of the final specs of the phone, the recent Nokia 9 dual lens camera information that the company accidentally revealed is seeming pretty reliable. While there’s a possibility that it will be included in the Nokia 8 (2018,) we’re much more confident that Nokia’s upcoming luxury flagship is the target for this technology. In just a little over a month we should have many more details, but until then, this rumor is looking pretty reliable.
