New Nokia 9 And Nokia 8 May Be Announced In January

Updated on

It seems as if HMD may not reveal the new Nokia 9 before the end of this year, with current signs pointing towards a January 19th announcement. A new report suggests that HMD Global will reveal their new product during a product launch event in China. It’s also likely that the second generation of the Nokia 8 will be announced at the same time.

The New Nokia 9: What We Know

Although the phone has yet to be announced, thanks to rumors and leaks we already have a general idea of what we can expect from the Nokia 9. The phone will be customized for a Chinese market, which is where it will likely release exclusively for the first part of the launch. This means that Google services like the Play Store won’t be included, instead replaced by an approved Chinese alternative.

This new report also mentions some of the phone’s technical specifications. We can expect the new Nokia 9 to feature a 5.5-inch Quad HD panel, 6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of internal storage. Additionally, both the Nokia 9 and the second generation Nokia 8 will likely sport a design emphasizing a large screen, and displays with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Snapdragon 835 chipset, a dual camera at the back, and IP67 water and dust protection round out what is shaping up to be an excellent mid-range phone. Unfortunately, the headphone jack will be omitted — a controversial decision that seems to becoming the norm with more and more manufacturers.

Nokia 9 Price and Release

The recent report also included information about the new Nokia 9 price, which seems to be $558 for the 6GB/64GB model and $634 for the 6GB/128GB. This price point makes it much more affordable than recent flagships from the likes of Apple and Samsung, while still packing in a decent amount of power.

It’s important to take any sort of rumor ahead of an official announcement with a grain of salt. It’s possible that all of this is off-base, but HMD has acted similarly with previous reveals and launches. The Nokia 6 was also unveiled in China, so it would make sense that these new flagships would also start their launch in Asia. An announcement of the worldwide release followed, around a month later, so the phone may be coming to the rest of us sooner than we think.

There’s no doubt about it: HMD has new Nokia flagships up their sleeves. Whether or not we actually see this announcement on January 19th remains to be seen.
