Nokia brand licensee HMD Global has shipped more than 16 million phones in the third-quarter of 2017. The sales number includes 2.8 million Nokia Android phones and 13.5 million Nokia feature phones, according to the data from the research firm, Counterpoint Research.
Emotional connection with Nokia phones
Based on the data (shared with the NokiaPowerUser), the Finnish smartphone brand climbed to the third position in the feature phones vendor list and sixteenth position in the smartphone vendor list.
“With in quarters of its re-entry in the market Nokia HMD quickly graduated to the 3rd spot in the feature phone segment. Nokia’s smartphones have also been well received in the market making it grow rapidly in recent quarters,” said Counterpoint Research.
The research firm stated that Nokia rang in with sentimental value with the dealers and customers along with a quality offering, which is helping the brand in the feature and smartphone market.
HMD has done a few smart tricks to boost sales of its Nokia Android phones. For instance, users are receiving the security update on time, and the company also delivered on its promise to deliver the OS update on time.
HMD Global, on the other hand, has not disclosed any official sales numbers since it began selling the Nokia phones last year. According to an earlier IDC report, HMD Global was able to sell somewhere around 1.5 million Nokia Android phones in the first half of 2017. Compared to the IDC numbers, the new numbers are surely encouraging for HMD and Nokia fans.
Nokia, however, has a long distance to cover as it is the 16th largest vendor in the smartphone segment based on the third-quarter data. Making headway into the top ten Android vendors would be a big achievement for HMD rather than trying to retain its position as the world’s largest feature phone maker and earn dismissal profit margins. Nevertheless, by spring of next year, its first year of being a global smartphone player, the company is determined to sell over ten million Android devices, notes Android Headlines.
Speaking to Nokioteca, HMD Global chief marketing officer Pekka Rantala said they are happy about the sales and are selling tens of millions of smartphones, as well as basic Nokia phones.
Nokia 9 – what to expect?
The Nokia 8 is currently the company’s most powerful smartphone. That could change soon with Nokia 9 launching some time in January. The handset would reportedly have a bezel-free display, Snapdragon 835 processor, dual cameras and 6 GB of RAM. According to a report from GSMArena, the FCC listing of the handset suggests that the device would have a 5MP module by Chicony. The report noted that the Chicony module talks about the dual camera setup instead of a single camera module.
Further, the handset would have on-board storage of 128GB, which would be expandable through a microSD card slot. The Nokia 9 would come with a 3250mAh battery and would supposedly be powered by Android 8 Oreo. Based on the information currently available on the device, it does not look any different (or any better) from the Android phones presently on the market.
