Best PS4 Games Of 2017: Here Is Your Favorite List

Updated on

2017 has been a massive year for Sony, and some of the best PS4 games released have really captured the imagination. It has been a calendar year in which the Japanese corporation has underlined its domination of the console marketplace, and it is therefore interesting to look back at the very best PS4 games released over the last 12 months.

Persona 5

Persona 5 is undoubtedly one of the best PS4 games of the calendar year, pushing the RPG genre forward with a combination of unique art, music and gameplay. With scenes based in contemporary Tokyo and bizarre yet beautiful alternate realities, Persona 5 captured the imagination of gamers all over the world, and truly crossed into the mainstream.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

A fascinating title that explores the thorny yet important issue of mental health, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice illustrates just what can be done with a contemporary video game. Literally enabling gamers to understand a rare and often misunderstood mental illness, it could be argued that Hellblade even provides a public service.

The gameplay here can be provocative, but that is really the whole point of this engaging and innovative title.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

More conventional was the latest Resident Evil game, and this is one that Capcom can be particularly proud of. Survival-horror is old news by now, of course, and the Resident Evil series has been around for several years. But this game did a great job of delivering the thrills and spills associated with Resident Evil, meaning that it is definitely a standout selection for 2017. Definitely one of the best PS4 games of 2017.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

The best PS4 games certainly wouldn’t be complete without this notorious Nazi shooter. Wolfenstein has established itself as a fixture in the gaming landscape, and one that is becoming as popular as the most successful games in the genre. There is intelligence here as well as mind-blowing violence, though, with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus providing something of an insight into the ruthless subjugation of the Nazis.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Undoubtedly a standout game of this or any other year, Horizon Zero Dawn presents a twist on the usual post-apocalyptic scenario. Technology and nature have evolved together in this game world, resulting in one of the most enjoyable titles this year.

With a particularly memorable central character in the shape of Aloy, Horizon Zero Dawn will undoubtedly go down as one of the best PS4 games of 2017, not least due to its beautiful and intricate game world.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Naughty Dog is readying The Last of Us 2 for release, but in the meantime this spin-off of the hugely popular Uncharted series was certainly welcome. Nathan Drake was replaced by two female protagonists, which received a strong critical reception. Not quite as meaty as a full-blown Uncharted title, but certainly sets the series up for a rich narrative direction in the future.

Gnog

Gnog was definitely one of the best PS4 Games of 2017, and also one of the most colorful. Playing Gnog in virtual reality is particularly memorable, with the title presenting what is effectively an interactive toybox. There is something decidedly psychedelic about this game, yet this colorful exterior belies a tricky and complicated series of puzzles within it. A nicely paced and gentle release from the usual video game shooting, Gnog can certainly be filed under best PS4 games of 2017.

Yakuza 0

Yakuza 0 is certainly one of the better known PS4 titles in 2017, but it is undoubtedly one of the most effective. The creators of this game have gone to great lengths to ensure that it is faithful to its historical setting, making this is one of the most enjoyable and absorbing games to hit the stores this year. Combat is particularly slickly presented, and when combined with the hugely vibrant Japan on offer this makes for an unforgettable gaming experience that PS4 players certainly shouldn’t miss out on.

Destiny 2

Far from subtle, and also far from low-profile, Destiny 2 delivered a blast-fest that was nonetheless hugely enjoyed by millions of players. The original Destiny was perhaps lacking in layers, which is not a criticism that can be levelled at its sequel. With a far more intelligent storyline and more varied cast of environments and enemies, the structure of Destiny 2 is much more pleasing.

And the core action had also been pleasingly tweaked, requiring slightly more strategy and perseverance. Destiny 2 can be something of a divisive title, but it undoubtedly belongs in any list of the best PS4 games of 2017.

Night in the Woods

This game goes to great links to tell an engaging story, and probably does it better than any other title released in 2017. The intertextuality and references included in Night in the Woods are all too obvious to those who are familiar with the horror genre in particular, but the game handles its transparent influences with great panache in unfolding its extraordinary narrative.

Gran Turismo Sport

This racing game is arguably one of the most controversial titles in the history of the PlayStation series, as it essentially abandons the traditional Gran Turismo formula. Gone were the thousands of hours needing to be invested in licenses, time trials, and an epic single-player campaign. In its place is a beautifully rendered and technically impressive racer that relies on online play in order to deliver an immersive experience.

While the game has been more savaged by fans than the new Star Wars movie, it has also attracted millions of players and received a warmer critical reception.

Gravity Rush 2

Finally, Gravity Rush 2 was arguably the best action-adventure title in 2017, and fully deserves to be considered one of the best PS4 games of the calendar year. Its expansive world and wide range of missions kept gamers engaged for many months, and it will be interesting to see how the developers attempt to top this with forthcoming sequels.
