The Pixel 2 series is very important for Google to establish itself as a premium smartphone brand. However, so far, the launch has been marred by several issues that have annoyed Pixel 2 buyers. To take the attention away from the issues, Google is adding new features, like predicting the Pixel battery life more accurately.
How new model predicts Pixel battery life
Google recently detailed a new process that it implemented to predict the battery life of Pixel phones with the help of deep learning technology. In a blog post, the search giant noted that the battery predictions so far were based on a simple logic, for instance, if a user is using 20% battery each hour for the past few hours, the algorithm assumes the rate to continue, and gives the forecast accordingly.
Now, Google is introducing a new on-device model, which the search giant claims analyzes how a phone’s battery is used over time.
“Your phone looks at your battery usage on similar days and times, and uses that to predict your battery life in a personalized way,” the post reads.
With this information on the battery use, the model then personalizes the prediction based on your usage.
“This means that if you’re like me and love to binge-watch YouTube on your way home, your phone will include that extra battery drain from Corgi videos in your estimate!” the post reads.
To use the new features, head to Settings, and then go to the Battery section. There, you will find a personalized battery estimate, which not only informs the percentage of battery left, but also the time (in hours) that the phone will last. Further, one can also view the information in the form of a graphical representation. This can be done by clicking the Battery icon, and then tapping the big battery icon.
In addition, the new model also shows information of the user’s specific phone usage habits and how each app is affecting the battery. Further, the new process allows users to adjust toggles for battery-saver mode and auto-brightness.
Will it come to other Android devices?
The Google Pixel 2 comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 2700 mAh battery, while the XL version has a 3520 mAh battery. Google’s new on-device model suggests that Google has developed a deep learning application to more accurately predict the Pixel battery life. In October, the search giant came up with Device Health Services, a battery management application, and this new model is expected to have added that.
Though it is a small change, it could make a big difference to a user’s smartphone experience. Android users will be hoping that this new change will move beyond the Pixel borders. According to Android Authority, the feature works on the Nexus 6P running Android 8.1 DP.
As always, the search giant promises to further improve your battery experience on the Pixel devices, and also asks for suggestions from users.
