The Giza Pyramid has always been a mystery throughout history. Scientists have always believed that one of the greatest and most wondrous pyramids in the world has many hidden secrets. Recently, scientists discovered a secret, yet giant void that was tucked inside the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The mentioned void is located above the pyramid’s Grand Gallery and is 30-meters long. The size of the discovered void seems to be of fundamental importance to the tomb’s structure. Moreover, the discovery of the hidden hole inside the Giza Pyramid is the first great discovery of this kind, since the 19th century.
As you may know, the Great Pyramid of Giza was originally built for Khufu, or Cheops, who was the second pharaoh of the 4th dynasty who reigned from 2589 to 2566BC. The pyramid is also one of the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World, but more importantly, it is the largest pyramid in the world.
“These results constitute a breakthrough for the understanding of Khufu’s Pyramid and its internal structure,” scientists said in a journal that was published in Nature.
Scientists have discovered this chamber while working on the ScanPyramids project that started back in 2015. Scientists used cosmic-rays in order to find the void, which works by recording subatomic particles. This method is also known as radiography, which provides an outline for 3D reconstruction of the space.
This method is great, as it creates an image for researchers to visualize the voids in the pyramid, without physically opening the pyramid.
“This large void has therefore been detected with high confidence by three different muon detection technologies and three independent analyses,” the scientists said. “While there’s currently no information about the role of this void, these findings show how modern particle physics can shed new light on the world’s archaeological heritage.”
It is also important to note that once archaeologists solve the mystery behind the void, they are planning to use similar technology in order to find the tomb of Queen Nefertiti, who was the wife of King Akhenaten. Several Egyptologists believe that there was a chance she was buried inside a secret chamber located in Tutankhamen’s tomb.
