Galaxy X And Galaxy S9: What We Know So Far

Updated on

There’s a lot of anticipation for Samsung’s next round of smartphone releases. Especially considering the iPhone X has recently launched with some amazing features. People are now wondering what Samsung – one of the biggest competitors of Apple – are going to bring to the table to match the iPhone X. Could the answer be the Samsung Galaxy X and Galaxy S9?

As always, there are lots of leaks and rumors surrounding the new releases, it’s hard to tell whats realistic and what’s not. We know for sure that there’s a Samsung Galaxy S9 coming, and hopefully a Samsung Galaxy X coming too – these are probably the most anticipated smartphones from Samsung yet. So, with that in mind, here’s everything we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy X and Galaxy S9.

The Samsung Galaxy X

If you follow the latest news in technology, then you have more than likely already heard about Samsung and their foldable screen technology. We have been hearing about it for years. Samsung has even promised that it would be released on a smartphone on more than one occasion, and both times failed to deliver.

But, it seems although the many problems Samsung has had with producing a flexible display may have finally come to an end. The latest rumors and leaks suggest that Samsung has finally managed to manufacture a working flexible screen on a smartphone, and they are currently working on prototype devices which will be unveiled during Q3 of 2017.

Obviously, the main feature of the Samsung Galaxy X is the fact that it has a foldable screen. This is something which we have never seen in a smartphone before, and it could be a game-changer.

Over the past 6 years or so, we have seen a few prototype devices from Samsung which showcase flexible screens. Nothing powerful enough to power a smartphone though.

How Do We Know That The Samsung Galaxy X Is Close?

Patents, of course. Samsung recently filed a patent which showcases a mechanism which would allow the internal hardware to move undamaged when the flexible screen is folded. This was more than likely one of the major issues which Samsung had to overcome when trying to introduce their flexible screen technology onto a smartphone.

What Are The Benefits Of A Flexible Display?

Because it’s such a new technology, it’s hard to imagine the ways which it could be put to use. But, one thing is for sure, you’re much less likely to have to fork out on expensive display repairs! The cost to repair an iPhone X display is over $200 through Apple. At least with a flexible display, it’s going to be much more resilient.

Another big benefit is the size. If the Galaxy X was the same size as an iPhone 8 Plus while folded, then it could double up to be more of a tablet rather than a smartphone, once it has been unfolded.

There’s also the fact that with a foldable screen, you would have a screen on the front and on the back of your device (when folded), which could come in handy. Especially if you could customize what displays on each screen.

Conclusion

At the moment, there’s no real evidence that the Galaxy X will be arriving next year, but it does look promising. We’ve had promises from Samsung before, that a smartphone device with a flexible screen will be coming soon. We have been hearing that for years. But, with the recent patents which have been filed, alongside the other information from reliable sources, it seems that we really might see a working prototype next year. Finally.

The Samsung Galaxy S9

This is the next version of the hugely popular Galaxy S series smartphones. There are rumors flying all over the place about what the device will look like, and what features it will contain. While these rumors are hard to tell fact from fiction, one thing we are pretty certain of is that the Galaxy S9 will probably be available for purchase in early 2017.

You only have to look at the Galaxy S8, and previous S devices, to know that they typically launch early in the new year, and as the Galaxy S8 was launched in February 2017, it’s highly likely we’ll see the same thing for the Galaxy S9. As far as features and design, here’s what we know so far:

How Much Will The Samsung Galaxy S9 Cost?

Current projections put the price to be around $725. This is based upon the fact that the S8 launched at this price, and as we’re not expecting to see many design changes (just hardware changes), we expect to see the same price.

What Specifications Should We Expect?

The latest leak leads us to believe the Galaxy S9 will use the. Exynos 9810 chipset, or possibly a new mobile chip which will be called the Snapdragon 845 – up from the 835 which is currently used in some versions of the Galaxy X8. We’re also expecting the Galaxy S9 to come with 4GB of RAM. At the moment, we don’t know anything about the Snapdragon 845’s power or performance.

3D Front Camera

It’s also been suggested that the Galaxy S9 will use a 3D sensor front camera, similar the one in the iPhone X. This means that we could well see facial recognition and something similar to the Animoji feature on the iPhone X.

Dual Lens Camera

While there has been nothing to suggest a dual lens camera on the S9, it’s something which all Samsung fans are hoping for. There were rumors that the S8 was going to be coming with a dual lens camera, like the iPhone 7 Plus did, but that never happened. Here’s to hoping that we’ll finally see the dual lens camera on the S9.

Conclusion

There’s not much yet known about the S9, but what we can be sure of is the design will be very similar to the S8, perhaps with the addition of a dual lens camera on the back, rather than a single lens, and the necessary components of the 3D front camera.

We will also be seeing an updated chipset, and can expect the RRP to be around $725 – the same launch price as the S8.

Samsung Galaxy X and Galaxy S9: Conclusion

It reminds me of when I was writing about the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. Two new devices, one which follows the patterns laid down by its predecessor, with updated hardware, and another with a new design and some radical changes and greatly improved hardware. I think that’s what we’re looking at here with the Galaxy X and Galaxy S9.

The Galaxy X and Galaxy S9 will likely be competing with the iPhone X and iPhone 8.

Another thing to note before we go. Samsung usually launch new products during March, but there are rumors these products could be launched as soon as February. This means that anybody who purchased the S8 wouldn’t be eligible to upgrade for another month. Perhaps Samsung are launching the Galaxy X and Galaxy S9 a little bit earlier, in the hope of winning over a few more Apple customers.
