Imagine the beautiful and ornate white marble of the Taj Mahal flooded by muddy river water not just once, but several times over the past few centuries. Yet in 360 years it’s never been flooded even though it was built on the bank of the Yamuna river, which regularly overflows. The ability of this world heritage site to remain unblemished over the centuries is due in large part to its unique foundation created by chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The main architectural challenge was how to develop a foundation that wouldn’t sink during the annual monsoons that swell up the Yamuna river.
