Samsung Patents An AirPower-Like Wireless Charging System

Updated on

A patent application suggests that Samsung is working on its own version of Apple’s AirPower wireless charging system.

As you may remember, Apple introduced the iPhone X in September. In addition to the upcoming iPhone X and other major device updates, the tech giant also revealed a wireless charging pad called the AirPower which can charge multiple devices at once. The AirPower is set for release in 2018, and it can charge the Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone, and more different devices.

Now the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has published a patent application for a Samsung wireless charging system that’s similar to Apple‘s AirPower. Considering that Apple revealed the AirPower late this year ahead of a launch next year, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Samsung wireless charging system makes an appearance alongside the Galaxy S9 early next year.

The Qi charging standard functions in two modes of charging: inductive and resonant. According to the patent application, the Samsung wireless charging system will have coils that will support both modes for reliability. The company describes in detail that the Samsung wireless charging apparatuses will be able to charge devices by using either of the mentioned methods.

If you take a look at the image below, you will see that Samsung’s patent features four models – FIG. 7A, FIG. 7B, FIG. 7C, and FIG 7D.

FIG. 7A shows an example in which a device is charged by the inductive method. The device is placed on a charging apparatus which uses two induction coils and a single resonance coil for charging.

FIG. 7B features an example of two devices being charged by the induction method. Both electronic devices are on a charging apparatus equipped with two induction coils and one resonance coil. FIG. 7C and FIG 7D show examples of one device which uses the induction method for charging and another device that is charged using the resonance method. The two devices are both placed on a charging apparatus equipped with two induction coils and a one resonance coil.

The Samsung wireless charging system should be a charging apparatus that will charge multiple devices using the induction and resonance methods.

It is still unknown when or if this patent will become a full product, especially because the company submitted the application over seven months ago.
