Based on many comparisons and reviews, the iPhone 8 Plus features the best camera on an iPhone yet. And not only that, but some would say the iPhone 8 Plus’ camera is one of the best ever put on any smartphone. Phone Arena came up with a creative way to test the camera of the iPhone 8 Plus and that of its predecessor, the iPhone 7 Plus. Take a look at this iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone 7 Plus camera comparison.

In this photo in particular, Phone Arena wanted to test the performance of the telephoto cameras. They tested the cameras at 2X zoom, and the person who took the photo felt it was easy to see that the photo taken by the iPhone 8 Plus’ camera looked closer to the actual scene than the one taken by the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera. The iPhone 8 Plus’ camera creates warmer images with more color vibrancy and precision than the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera.
Even though the iPhone 8 Plus’ camera took clearer and more accurate photos, however, the iPhone 7 Plus‘ camera offered a sharper image from up close. This was quite confusing, although Phone Arena stated that this is probably related to the hardware itself or the digital noise handling of both phones’ cameras.
Both images look fantastic. The devices avoided using HDR settings. The photos taken by the iPhone 8 Plus’ and 7 Plus‘ cameras look surprising similar to each other. However, greater detail and contrast are apparent on the iPhone 8 Plus’ side.
There is no zoom in these images, although it is fascinating how both cameras adjusted to the ambient nighttime lighting despite the streetlights and the lights that cover the church. Once again, the iPhone 8 Plus‘ camera offered better precision, color accuracy and vibrancy. It doesn’t hurt to mention that the iPhone 8 Plus’ camera handles details much better, making the overall image sharper, although the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera isn’t far behind.
The images taken with the iPhone 8 Plus’ camera on Portrait Mode seem much more natural than those taken by its predecessor. On close examination, you will notice that the subject’s skin and jacket colors are more natural in the photo taken by the 8 Plus than they are in the same picture taken by the iPhone 7 Plus‘ camera. Apple has improved the iPhone 8 Plus’ Portrait Mode by enabling it to use the flash.
On the photo that was taken inside, you will notice that the iPhone 8 Plus’ photo is slightly brighter than the one taken by the iPhone 7 Plus. However, that doesn’t change much, although as one would expect, the details in the iPhone 8 Plus’ photo are more detailed, and the brightness didn’t compromise the overall image quality.
As you can see, comparing the same photos taken by the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus in different ambient lighting and at different times of the day reveals only small differences between them. While the cameras on both phones performed outstandingly, it isn’t a surprise that the colors in the photos taken by the 8 Plus are more precise and vibrant.
The details are handled in a better manner by the newer model, although in most of the images Phone Arena took, we can’t really tell the difference between the two cameras. The only thing that could generally use some improvement is the performance of the flash. The colors are undoubtedly more lifelike in the photos taken by the iPhone 8 Plus, but the amount of lighting in some of the photos left something to be desired.
So to sum up the findings of this camera comparison, if you own an iPhone 7 Plus, there is no need for you to upgrade to an iPhone 8 Plus–unless you want more precise and vivid colors in your photos (or if there are any non-camera features you want in the 8 Plus).
