The Pixel 2 XL was only revealed earlier this month and already there is a lot of debate about the display. Some users love it, some users hate it, and some are indifferent. The debate boils down to the color reproduction on the display and the feeling among some that the colors are unnatural. This is due to software that is meant to enhance the viewing experience of the Pixel 2 XL display. Of course, you can’t make everyone happy. So – will the Google Pixel 2 XL display fix come in the form of a software update?
We already know that Google is working on an update for their newest flagship devices. Tweaks and bug fixes are common after a device launch. Just look at Apple – they have been steadily pushing out iOS updates since the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were launched. To their credit, Google has already acknowledged the feedback from users and indicated a change is being implement and more changes could be coming. See their quote from a statement released to The Verge in response to a question about the display:
Khrom Capital was up 32.5% gross and 24.5% net for the first quarter, outperforming the Russell 2000's 21.2% gain and the S&P 500's 6.2% increase. The fund has an annualized return of 21.6% gross and 16.5% net since inception. The total gross return since inception is 1,194%. Q1 2021 hedge fund letters, conferences and more Read More
We designed the Pixel display to have a more natural and accurate rendition of colors this year but we know some people prefer more vivid colors so we’ve added an option to boost colors by 10% for a more saturated display. We’re always looking at people’s responses to Pixel and we will look at adding more color options through a software update if we see a lot of feedback.
So, as you can see, an option to boost colors by 10% has already been added for users who want that feature. In addition, they say they may add more color options in a future update based on feedback. This shows that Google is open to feedback and is not taking a, “take it or leave it” stance with the Google Pixel 2 XL display fix.
While it would be nice to simply have all of these options baked into the software at launch, we have to give credit to Google for acknowledging the feedback and acting on it with a promise to monitor feedback and act further if required. If only they had listened to us about the 3.5mm headphone port…
I personally haven’t had a chance to hold the Pixel 2 XL in my hands so I can’t say if a Google Pixel 2 XL display fix is necessary or not. Most reviews have been positive but color reproduction is one of those weird things that seems to be fine for some people and completely bother others. I think the right way of handling things is what Google is doing; monitor the feedback and implement changes if needed.
What do you think of the Google Pixel 2 XL display fix? Was it necessary or are people getting too nitpicky with smartphones these days?
