Google has had better weeks, that’s for sure. First there were complaints about a blue tint on the display of the Google Pixel 2 XL. Then there were complaints about screen burn-in on the OLED displays. Google released an update to help fix the first issue for some owners but it was clear that the Pixel 2 XL was off to a rough start. One of the worst things about this Pixel 2 XL display debacle was a lack of understanding. Is this an issue limited to some devices? Is it a manufacturing issue? Is my Pixel 2 XL going to pull a Galaxy Note 7 and try to burn my face off? All valid questions that need answers. Finally, Google seems to have given us an answer to explain the Google Pixel 2 XL screen blue tint problem that some users have been complaining about.
Blame Your Sunglasses
Okay, maybe it’s not actually the fault of your sunglasses but the component causing the issue was added to try and make the display more usable for those who may be wearing tinted lenses. The polarizer that Google added to the display was meant to help users enjoy their smartphone no matter what kind of eyewear they were rocking. However, that seems to have blown up in Google’s face. Improperly applied polarizers appear to be the reason some users feel like their display has an ugly blue tint.
Not Everyone Is Affected
Because this is a hardware issue that has to do with the application of a component, the amount of Google Pixel 2 XL screen blue tint experienced by users may vary. This is why, if you went to Reddit or an Android forum, you saw many users complaining about blue tint while some users questions what in the hell they were even talking about. I checked out the Pixel 2 XL while I was at the mall yesterday and I didn’t notice a blue tint on the device I was holding. I seriously wondered if the people complaining about blue tint were suffering from some sort of color blindness or something. This is a bit of a blessing and a curse for Google. It means that there are probably a lot of users unaffected by the blue tint issue. However, it also means that a software update likely won’t fix the issue completely. First of all, how do you fix a hardware issue with a software update that won’t be relevant for a large number of users. Secondly… Does this mean it’s time to start doing replacements for every user that complains?
No Solution For Now
The worst news for those with Google Pixel 2 XL screen blue tint disease is that there isn’t a real solution right now. Software updates can only do so much. A true, surefire fix would be to replace the polarizer. That means sending your device in for a replacement or repair. Not exactly a great experience for people who just paid for a brand new flagship smartphone.
