Facebook Self-Destructing Statuses Are In Development

Updated on

Facebook self-destructing statuses are in the works; the company has even confirmed that it started testing them this week.

The Facebook self-destructing statuses are actually being called “temporary profile statuses” by the world’s most popular social media network. The company wants to encourage its users to use its platform even more by posting text-only status updates of up to 101 characters long. A representative for the company confirmed the authenticity of this information to BuzzFeed News on Tuesday.

It is no secret that Facebook is used not only for connecting with other people but also to promote videos, links, pictures, and advertisements. The company wants to change this by adding the Facebook self-destructing statuses feature, which it believes will attract new users and encourage younger ones to post text-only updates instead of just videos and links. The addition of the “temporary profile status” feature suggests that the company wants to bring back old times when everyone was posting text answering the question, “What’s on your mind?” in their status updates. Users can also choose to keep these statuses permanently on their timeline rather than having them self-destruct.

You may remember that Facebook statuses used to begin with the word “is,” which prompted users to post about what they were doing at that very moment. The company seems to want to bring this habit back with the Facebook self-destructing statuses feature.

“We’re testing an update that lets people set a temporary status on their profile to let friends know what they’re doing or feeling at the moment,” a Facebook spokesperson told BuzzFeed. “People have the option to set an expiration date for the status and choose whether or not it appears in News Feed or only on their profile.”

Last year, Facebook noticed that people were sharing things on another platform–Snapchat–more than they were initially on Facebook. The company then proceeded to add the Live option and the Stories option, which incredibly resembles Snapchat Stories and brought many users back to Facebook.

We will see whether Facebook has more aces up its sleeve to bring its platform back to its original state. Nevertheless, the Facebook self-destructing statuses will definitely bring back some of the company’s old charm.

What do you think about Facebook self-destructing statuses? Do you think it is going to bring more people back to the platform? Please leave a comment!
