Twitter Partners With The Weather Channel To Live-Stream Next Week’s Eclipse

Updated on

Twitter has failed to add users, attract advertisers and curb harassment on its site, which has kept it from being able to grow its revenue. Thus, new sources of revenue are a must for the company to survive, and live-streaming is the company’s new focus as it attempts to attract more users and advertisers.

Twitter to chase the total Solar Eclipse

The micro-blogging firm is now going to live-stream the total solar eclipse next week. Sensing an opportunity to attract more eyeballs, the micro-blogging company has entered into a business deal with the Weather Channel to help it live-stream the eclipse.

“This eclipse is a once-in-a-hundred-year event, and we’re going to party like it’s New Year’s Eve,’” said Neil Katz, editor-in-chief of the Weather Channel, in a press release.

Twitter livestream will begin at 12 p.m. Eastern on August 21, and viewers will get to see live footage from cities in Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Kentucky, Illinois, South Carolina, Tennessee and Oregon. The event has already drawn interest from people around the world.

The astronomical event is the result of the moon’s shadow moving from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States. At its fastest, the moon’s shadow will move at over 2,400 miles per hour, and live shots will also be taken at locations where totality will last the longest and the possibility of interesting occurrences exists.

Featuring several events

Meteorologists Ari Sarsalari and Demonica Davis will host the Twitter livestream. It will be high-resolution and include aerial drone footage from the Weather Channel’s network of storm trackers and real-time eclipse footage from NASA as well. The stream will also include a quirky game show and a Red Bull cliff-diving showdown under the eclipse’s shadow.

“The ‘Chasing Eclipse 2017’ live stream allows people around the world to watch and join the #Eclipse2017 conversation as it unfolds live on Twitter,” said Twitter COO Anthony Noto.

It’s a rare event, so people who take interest in it but for various reasons cannot travel to a point that falls along the path of totality can easily feel like they are there by watching the Twitter livestream of the event. Those who are interested can watch the stream on Twitter and also access it from the Weather Channel’s app and website.
