Galaxy S9 Concept: We Want This To Turn Into Reality

Updated on

Samsung has tasted grand success with the Galaxy S8. The rumor mill is right now dominated by the Galaxy Note 8. But one concept designer has come up with a Galaxy S9 concept that is so beautiful we would want it to turn into reality. It has all the cool things that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S8, and the designer has improved certain aspects to make it even more beautiful.

This Galaxy S9 concept has in-display fingerprint sensor

The Galaxy S9 is unlikely to arrive until March 2018 at the earliest. There have been only a few leaks about the device so far. The render, created by GalaxyS9Blog and published on YouTube by Upcoming Phones, is based on recent rumors. It shows what the phone would look like without the top and bottom bezels. The Galaxy S9 concept has a curved bezel-less display with a metal unibody chassis.

Supply chain rumors suggest that the S9 would retain the Infinity display that Samsung first used on the Galaxy S8. In this concept, the front camera, iris scanner, and other sensors are placed under the display, which covers the entire front panel. The fingerprint scanner has also been integrated into the display. Samsung tried adding the in-display fingerprint sensor to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, but gave up due to technical issues.

The company will likely incorporate the feature into the Galaxy S9. The designer says users can touch anywhere on the screen to unlock the phone and authenticate payments. The new Galaxy S9 concept render has no visible antenna lines on the back panel. The phone sports a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 4K resolution. If it turns out to be true, the S9 will be Samsung’s first smartphone to offer 4K experience. The bezel-less display is covered with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 for protection.

A dual camera system on the front

The Galaxy Note 8, set to release later this month, will be the first Samsung phone to sport a dual camera on the back. The company is expected to carry the dual camera setup forward to the Galaxy S9. The concept S9 has two 16-megapixel sensors on the back with a Dual Tone flash. The designer takes it a step further by adding a dual camera setup on the front as well. The Galaxy S9 concept has two 8MP sensors on the front to let you take better selfies.

The concept phone retains the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top. Interestingly, there is no sign of a charging port on the device. It means the phone fully supports wireless charging. The device is powered by an octa-core processor with 6GB or 8GB RAM. Samsung is reportedly working with Qualcomm to integrate the latter’s Snapdragon 845 chipset into the Galaxy S9. There will also be an Exynos-powered variant of the device for Asian markets.

A sleek design and a huge battery

The Galaxy S9 concept has a sleek design. It measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm, the same as the current Galaxy S8 phones. The phone offers 64GB and 128GB of internal storage, which users can increase further via a microSD card slot. The device will run Android O right out of the box. The new version of Android is set to launch with Google Pixel 2 later this year.

The concept S9 has a huge 4200mAh non-removable battery. You’d expect a bigger battery for a phone that offers the 4K resolution. By comparison, the current Galaxy S8 comes with a 3000mAh battery. Other features include water- and dust-resistance, OTG support, and dual or nano SIM. The device will likely be priced above $900, speculates the designer.

New Galaxy phone to get Y-OCTA display

Earlier this year, The Bell claimed that Samsung had already started working on the S9. A recent report from ETNews said the S9 would have the Y-OCTA display technology. Samsung has previously used the Y-OCTA technology on the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8. The Korean company is ramping up production of Y-OCTA displays to meet the potential demand.

Y-OCTA is a display technology that combines the display and the touch function into one manufacturing process. It leads to a 30% reduction in production cost and a slimmer design. According to The Investor, the S9 and S9 Plus will have the same screen sizes as the current Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus: 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch. The company has informed Samsung Display about the Galaxy S9 display specifications.

Galaxy S9 to feature Cat 18 LTE modem

Meanwhile, another report claims that the Galaxy S9 will use Samsung’s recently announced Cat 18 LTE modem with 6CA support. The new LTE modem is set to enter production later this year. It will offer download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps compared to the current Galaxy S8’s 1Gbps modem. It can access up to six LTE bands simultaneously. The current Galaxy S8 can link to only 5 LTE bands at any given time.

The Galaxy S9 is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2018, which will take place between February 26 and March 01 in Barcelona. This year’s Galaxy S8 release was delayed by a few weeks due to the Note 7 debacle.
