Motorola has slashed the price of its latest flagship, the Moto Z2 Force, by $80, according to the company’s official website. At the time of launch, the Moto Z2 Force was priced at $799. The drop in price will surely be welcomed by potential buyers, as the original $100 increase in price over last year’s Moto Z Force was certainly not welcomed.
Previous Moto Z2 Force price was an “error”
Motorola’s decision definitely comes as a surprise because the phone is still in the pre-order stage. In the United States, the handset will become available by August 10. Compared to the previous hefty price tag of $800, now the phone can be pre-ordered for about $720. Motorola is still offering the projector mode for free with a pre-order.
Many believed that one possible reason for the sudden slash in the price could be slow pre-orders at the $800 price point. However, according to Motorola, the initial pricing of the Moto Z2 Force was an error.
“The $799 was an error when the site initially launched. The pricing for Moto Z2 Force Edition starts at $30/month and always has, and may vary depending on which carrier is selected,” the company said in a statement to GSM Arena.
At the time of launch also, Motorola made it clear that carriers could sell the phone for $30 per month, which works out to about $720. However, the company’s own website listed it as $800 at that time, notes TechRadar.
Meanwhile, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile are offering a free Moto Mod projector, while T-Mobile is also offering a buy one, get one free deal on the handset.
Is it worth the price?
The Moto Z2 Force is a good phone with many good features, but the high price was definitely not good news, especially given that the screen is shatterproof and not scratchproof.
Ryan Whitwam of Android Police stated, “On the Z2 Force, a fingernail is enough to scratch the display. This is not true of last year’s Z Force. I can’t think of any reason Motorola would downgrade the materials, but that’s what it did.”
Motorola later responded to the doubts stating that shatterproof does not mean scratchproof. Therefore, Motorola suggests the use of third-party protective screen guards to be used. Further, the company stated that it has always believed in evolving the design, and this time it is the 3D design which makes it more competitive compared to phones made by other brands.
The Motorola Z2 Force runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and has 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. The phone runs on Android 7.1 and will be upgraded on a regular basis when Android O comes. The company has used 7,000 series aluminum in the handset to ensure that its svelte frame does not bend under stress.
The Moto Z2 Force is considerably thinner than its predecessors, but it has surely taken a toll on the battery capacity of the phone, which stands at 2,730 mAH compared to the massive 3,500 mAH battery in the previous Moto Z Force. And not only is the battery capacity smaller, but the company has also dumped the headphone jack from the Moto Z2 Force.
