Rumored Feature: Galaxy Note 8’s Pressure Sensitive Screen

Updated on

Another Galaxy Note 8 rumor has emerged from the rumor mill. This feature should be very interesting for those that enjoy the 3D Touch feature on the iPhone. A new report from The Korea Herald suggests that there will be a Galaxy Note 8 pressure sensitive screen. This would be a new rumor to add to the list of rumored or leaked Galaxy Note 8 features. A pressure sensitive screen would be a very exciting addition to the Galaxy Note 8. Depending on how responsive the screen is to pressure, there could be several applications involving the S Pen that make taking notes or drawing images more natural.

With the Galaxy Note 8 launch only weeks away, it seems strange that there would be a major feature leak this late in the process. After all, pretty much every single other Note 8 feature has been leaked. Still, it’s not entirely out of the question that something like this would slip through the cracks. It’s not like you can tell by looking at a leaked render or image whether a display is pressure sensitive or not.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ used a similar technology on their home buttons but it’s expected that the Galaxy Note 8 will build upon the design of the feature to make the entire display pressure sensitive. South Korean manufacturers, Iljin Display and ELK Corporation are said to be working on the new display which makes sense as they were the companies tapped to implement the feature in Samsung’s previous devices. Of course, that could also mean that the Galaxy Note 8 pressure sensitive screen could be less like Apple’s touch screen technology and more like what we find in the Galaxy S8. That would certainly be a disappointment when you consider all the possibilities of a pressure sensitive display and the S Pen.

This is just one more leak in a long list of Galaxy Note 8 leaks this summer. There almost isn’t a single thing we don’t know about the upcoming device. For example, one of the biggest leaks recently was details about the Galaxy Note 8 camera features. We got an opportunity to see comparisons between the Galaxy Note 8 dual camera sensor and other competitors. The dual camera sensor will allow the Galaxy Note 8 to capture very good low-light photos. As well, the Note 8 is also rumored to offer 3x optical zoom. This allows for much better image quality compared to digital zoom. Edges of distant objects will look sharper and more defined on the Galaxy Note 8. And, probably the most interesting camera feature is the distance and height measurement of objects. The leaked materials about this feature weren’t very thorough but I would expect that this feature has something to do with augmented reality. We know Apple is making a big push into AR this fall and it would make sense that Samsung is following suit.

The many, many leaked renders of the Galaxy Note 8 have also taken away any design surprises that Samsung may have had in store for the official reveal date. If these renders are accurate; it appears that Samsung will be moving ahead with an infinity display on the Galaxy Note 8, similar to what we see on the Galaxy S8 and S8+. This means a nearly bezel-less design which, in my opinion, is the best design trend in smartphones right now. Less bezels, more love from me!

From the display, to leaked design renders, to even the battery… The Galaxy Note 8 is the worst kept secret in the tech industry. However, even a poorly kept secret can still have a surprise buried deep inside. This Galaxy Note 8 pressure sensitive screen may have been one of the last remaining surprises come launch day. Of course, this rumor is just that – a rumor. Nothing is for sure until we see it on stage at Samsung’s event. The official reveal of the Galaxy Note 8 is expected to be later this month with the much-anticipated smartphone going on sale something in early-September. Does this pressure sensitive screen change anything for you? More excited? Less excited? About the same? Let us know your thoughts.
