The iPhone 8 reveal date is rumored to be just a few weeks away. We already know quite a bit about the device thanks to a ton of leaks throughout the summer including a leak directly from Apple itself – previously unannounced details included in the HomePod firmware. However, there hasn’t been a lot of news about the iPhone 8 color options that would be available. Some analysts have suggested we may or may not see certain colors but there has been no photo evidence to back those suggestions up. That is, until now.
Leaked images posted on Chinese microblogging site, Weibo, appear to show 3 iPhone 8 shells in different color options. There’s no real way to tell if these are legitimate components from manufacturers as the iPhone 8 enters mass production or simply mockups based on renders. Probably the most interesting part of these photos is the copper gold iPhone 8 color. Take a look at the images for yourself below:
As you can see, the copper gold iPhone 8 color is slightly different than the rose gold color we have seen over the past few years. Of course, this could be due to lighting. There is also the possibility that these are not legitimate iPhone 8 parts. However, it does make sense that we would start seeing component leaks now that the iPhone 8 is being mass produced in anticipation of a fall launch.
The vertically aligned dual camera sensor on these components does lend some legitimacy to the leak. We know that the iPhone 8 is going to feature a dual camera sensor that is vertically aligned for best performance in augmented reality applications. There has been no suggestion the iPhone 7S or 7S Plus would feature a similarly designed camera setup which makes sense as Apple would probably like to have their AR-ready camera only available on their highest tier of smartphone – at least initially.
Unfortunately there were no images of the front of the iPhone 8 in this leak. This could be that the leaker was simply focused on showing off color or that these are shell components and the screen had not been installed yet. Plus, we already have a very good idea of how the iPhone 8 display will look thanks to Apple’s HomePod leak which included an illustration of the iPhone 8 display. We are fully expecting to see a nearly bezel-less iPhone 8 display with the home button removed. The result is a clean, edge to edge display that will be the biggest change in iPhone design since we first got introduced to the smartphone lineup nearly 10 years ago.
This leak obviously also does not touch on any of the rumored features in the iPhone 8. However, the HomePod leak last week gave us a great idea of what to expect in the upcoming iPhone 8. For example, the code in the HomePod firmware (which is simply a version of iOS 11) detailed a new SmartCamera that will be able to detect the content of a photo and adjust the settings of the camera in order to capture the best image. We’re excited to see how well this feature works in the real world but Apple has always had some of the best camera features like Portrait Mode, for example.
The long-rumored 3D face scanning feature is pretty much a sure thing at this point, again, thanks to Apple themselves. PearlID is the rumored named of this feature and it should be able to do everything that TouchID can do. Using an infrared camera, users will scan their face which will then be used to unlock their device, authorize Apple Pay purchases, and access secure apps. Don’t worry, if you don’t like the idea of your iPhone scanning your face and keeping track of specific details, TouchID doesn’t sound like it has been lost along with the home button. Analysts believe that TouchID will be included as a part of the lock/power button on the right-hand side of the iPhone 8. This is similar to what you see in Sony’s devices.
