Save The Apple iPhone 8 Event Date: September 12

Updated on

All eyes are on Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 8 right now. But a tipster might just have revealed when the Galaxy Note 8’s biggest competitor would be announced. Apple remains silent about the iPhone 8 event date, though we expect the company to send out press invites for the next month’s show by the end of this month. The Cupertino company is expected to announce as many as three iPhones at the September event: the iPhone 8, iPhone 7S, and iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple has informed carriers about the iPhone 8 event date

The iPhone maker has traditionally unveiled new iPhones in the first half of September every year. It holds the unveiling events on a Tuesday or Wednesday. So, we knew that the most probable iPhone 8 event date was September 5 or September 6. The other possible dates were Sept.12 or 13. Now Mac4Ever has learned from sources within wireless carriers that the 10th anniversary iPhone would be unveiled on September 12th.

Apple informs carriers on the iPhone launch details to help them prepare for inventory and marketing campaigns. Mac4Ever has been fairly accurate in the past. Assuming its report turns out to be true, we can expect the new iPhones to become available for pre-order on September 15th and go on sale on September 22. It’s worth mentioning that there is no guarantee the iPhone maker would follow the same launch format every year. Nothing is official yet.

Photos of what appears to be iPhone 8 carrier presentation were also posted on Chinese site Weibo, confirming the iPhone 8 event date. The leaked time-frame makes sense. We should still treat the report with a bit of skepticism until Apple confirms the date.

Recent reports suggest that the 4.7-inch iPhone 7S and 5.5-inch iPhone 7S Plus should go on sale in September. These phones are minor upgrades over the current flagship models, and would not face any supply constraints. But the 10th anniversary iPhone 8 could suffer from supply shortages. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims only 2-4 million units of the iPhone 8 would be available in September due to production issues.

Apple’s partners are expected to ramp up production to 45-50 million units during the fourth quarter to meet the holiday demand. Earlier reports had suggested that the iPhone 8 might not launch until October/November. But Kuo believes Apple will be able to launch the anniversary model in September itself, though only in limited quantities.

iPhone 8 to be the most exciting iPhone launch ever

The 10th-anniversary flagship is said to be the biggest upgrade in Apple’s smartphone lineup in years. It will have an entirely new design with a 5.8-inch OLED display. The screen will cover almost entire front panel, except for a cutout at the top to include the ear speaker, front camera, 3D infrared sensor, and other sensors. The physical home button will be replaced by a virtual ‘function area’ that will offer dynamic controls – including a resizable home button – based on whatever app is on the screen.

It would have 3D sensing modules both on the front and back for facial recognition and augmented reality applications. The AR on iPhone 8 will allow users to interact with the device and their surroundings in new ways. The phone’s rear dual camera will be arranged vertically rather than horizontally. Other features include wireless charging, an A11 chipset, and better waterproofing.

The iPhone 8 is also rumored to include a new SmartCam technology that will recognize what you are taking photos of and then it will automatically change the settings to take the best picture.

iPhone 8 to come with 512GB of internal storage

A new post on Weibo (via Techtastic.nl) claims that the iPhone 8 would be available in three storage options: 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB. We have previously heard reports of 64GB and 256GB models, but this is the first time the 512GB variant has appeared in the rumor mill.

The Weibo post added that the 64GB and 256GB NAND flash memory modules will be supplied by SanDisk and Toshiba. For the 512GB modules, Apple has tapped Samsung and SK Hynix. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7S Plus would offer 3GB RAM. The smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 7S would pack 2GB RAM.

The significant jump in storage makes sense considering 4K content and high-resolution photos would occupy a lot of space. The 10th anniversary iPhone will also offer augmented reality, which might demand more storage.

LTE Apple Watch to launch with new iPhones

Apple is also rumored to launch the third-generation Apple Watch at the same iPhone 8 event. According to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new Apple Watch will be available in the same 38mm and 42mm sizes as its predecessors. There will be little change in terms of design, but the Apple Watch Series 3 is said to offer LTE connectivity.

The LTE connectivity will allow users to take full advantage of the Watch’s capabilities without connecting the wearable device to an iPhone. You will be able to download apps, stream music, and do much more even when you are away from your iPhone. There will also be a non-LTE variant. Kuo claims Apple is currently in talks with all major US carriers to support the LTE Apple Watch. Data plans for the wearable device are expected to be similar to the iPad plans.
