Nintendo: Super Mario Odyssey Will Support Co-op Mode

Updated on

It has been confirmed now that the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey will have a co-op mode similar to Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii. During E3, Nintendo shared several details about the game, but this co-op mode was kept a secret until now. The co-op mode was shown during Nintendo’s E3 Treehouse Live stream, giving viewers a chance to witness Mario and his hat Cappy in action together.

Nintendo makes Cappy invincible

In co-op mode, players will take advantage of of the Switch’s Joy-con controller, which allows one player to control Mario and the other to control Cappy. Mario and Cappy will have camera control, and the latter could collect the items which will prove handy for faraway coins and collectibles. Cappy doesn’t take damage, making it apt for less experienced players, notes The Verge. He is also capable of quick actions, such as grabbing scattered music notes that will help players solve the puzzles.

Although Mario will retain his traditional abilities such as running, jumping and controlling the camera, he will no longer be able to control Cappy. However, during the event, Nintendo did drop a hint that Mario could control Cappy in some way, but in what way was not revealed in the demo. The player who controls Cappy can perform attacks, fly around and control the camera, notes Polygon.

According to  game director Kenta Motokura, the Switch’s support for two players inspired him to create Cappy.

“While I do love that feature, I’m not sure it will work well in a fully 3D platformer where camera control is tricky,” the expert said.

Those who can recall playing Mario in Super Mario Galaxy, which had a similar two-player local co-op mode, can identify with this newest game. The mode is also similar to the 16-bit Sonic The Hedgehog games for the Sega Genesis, in which the second player can take control of Tails in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. In this game also, Tail was invincible primarily and helps  Sonic during tough situations, notes Cinemablend.

Plenty of surprises and secrets in Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo exhibited several interesting features during the launch of the new game. Players can explore huge 3D kingdoms with hidden surprises and secrets, like traveling in vehicles. Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey also offers new surprises such as Donk City, which is full of Skyscrapers. Further, there will be the usual features, such as saving Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches and spoiling his reprehensible wedding plans.

“The theme for Mario this time is a grand journey in search of surprise,” Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi said during an E3 panel presentation.

Three new amiibo figures will be sold separately: Mario, Princess Peach and Bowser in their wedding outfits, notes N-Europe. Nintendo has made sure that a few previously-released amiibo are also compatible with this title.

Super Mario Odyssey will arrive on the Nintendo Switch on October 27.
