Gears of War Designer says Microsoft Project Scorpio is ‘Promising’

Updated on

Microsoft’s Project Scorpio, which is expected during this year’s holiday shopping season, is the most-anticipated gaming console this year, and it has already caught the attention of most in the gaming community. Now it has grabbed some positive comments from Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski.

Bleszinski hints at an Xbox version of LawBreakers

When asked about his opinion on Scorpio in a Reddit AMA on Monday, Bleszinski applauded Microsoft for “getting their sh** together. They’re putting it in a backpack or in a shit museum and getting it alllll together.”

Bleszinski, who quit Epic Games to co-found Boss Key, also said that an Xbox One version of LawBreakers could be a reality.

“Scorpio is promising. MS bet on Kinect too hard last round. Don’t rule out an Xbox version [of LawBreakers], btw,” he said.

Last year, however, he was not a fan of Project Scorpio.

He told Kotaku at E3 2016, “I think it feels like an apology move for them for not making the console as powerful as it should have been in favour of making sure the Kinect was boxed in with it. So now they have to play catch-up.”

Bleszinski, who worked as design director at Epic Games, has been heavily involved with Gears Of War 1, 2 and 3. Gears of War 4 is the first in the series to be developed internally at Microsoft, and he said that the game was exciting and that he is curious to find out “how much of my ideas will stick as they continue with the series… :)”

At the Reddit AMA, Bleszinski also revealed that the multiplayer FPS LawBreakers will come to PS4 and PC. On both the PC and PS4, the LawBreakers will cost $30. Boss Key also informed fans that there will be no season pass-style program, and all future content updates will be free, although cosmetic upgrades will be made available through loot boxes and microtransactions, notes GamePlanet. The PS4 version of the game, which will also support the PS4 Pro, will be unveiled at E3.

Project Scorpio is sure to be powerful

Microsoft announced Project Scorpio at its E3 briefing this year and claims it to be the most powerful console ever built. The company could be right if we compare its specs with those of the PS4 Pro. The console features eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz, a 1172MHz graphics processor and 12GB of system memory. It also supports native 4K resolution gaming at 60 frames per second.

For Project Scorpio, Microsoft stuck with AMD’s Jaguar processor class, which also powered the Xbox One and the PS4. Though it has been customized for the Scorpio, the company could have gone for a newer, more powerful processor family. As of now, there is no information on the price of the console, but it is believed that the Scorpio could come with a $499 price tag.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, described the typical person who may buy the Scorpio: “I think Scorpio is for the console customer who wants the best version of the console games on their television, whether they have a 1080p or a 4K television.”
