Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Kingdom Hearts 3 Planned In Next Few Years

Updated on

It sounds like Square Enix has big plans for fans of two of its most popular franchises. During the company’s most recent quarterly earnings call, management shared a slide which suggests that the Final Fantasy 7 remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 are both slated for release within the next three years.

Square Enix is hiring for the Final Fantasy 7 remake

During the earnings call this month, Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix, showed a slide that listed installments for many of their popular franchises. He described the slide as showing the gaming company’s release lineup for roughly the next three years.

Give other things we’ve heard about the Final Fantasy 7 remake, it sounds like the release will be be later rather than sooner within that three-year launch window he referenced. This week IGN called attention to some recruiting messages posted on Square Enix’s website. The message states that the game maker is “urgently” seeking talent for the development team for the Final Fantasy 7 remake. It also states that they are looking to “recruit as much staff as possible,” according to a translation of the Japanese-language letter.

The developer also hopes the quality of the Final Fantasy 7 remake will surpass that of the original. The message also states that they are now “into the development progress phase.” Square Enix first announced that it was working on the Final Fantasy 7 remake two years ago at E3, and since then we’ve heard very little about it. However, Steve Burton did confirm on Twitter earlier this month that he will be reprising his role as Cloud Strife for the remake.

We’ve heard recently that Final Fantasy 8 could also be remade, although Square Enix probably wants to get 7 out of the way first.

Kingdom Hearts 3 may be set for next year

While the Final Fantasy 7 remake appears to be quite far off, well-known Square Enix insider Jose Alamo tweeted earlier this month that the developer is targeting a late-2018 release date for Kingdom Hearts 3. According to a translation of his tweets (via Fandom), the developer is planning to show a trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 at E3 and then release it in late 2018.

Fandom reports that Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura is “quite the perfectionist,” which has caused development of the game to take longer than originally expected. The game maker originally revealed that it was working on Kingdom Hearts 3 in 2013.

The website also notes that the Final Fantasy 7 remake was also slated for a 2018 release, but the recruitment message for the remake makes it seem as if it might not be ready next year. Perhaps Square Enix will finally be ready to spill some more concrete details at E3, which is now less than two months away. Unfortunately, the developer left fans with no word about Kingdom Hearts 3 at last year’s E3.
